Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber Being Treated for Cancer

A spokesman for composer Andrew Lloyd Webber confirmed to press this morning that he'd been diagnosed with prostate cancer, in its very early stages. His spokesperson added that "Andrew is now undergoing treatment and expects to be fully back at work before the end of the year."

Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre is presenting the 2nd production in their season, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” starring American Idol Finalist Anthony Fedorov in the title role. Now there are those that say this show is overdone and nothing really new or fresh can be done with it. I was one of those people. To them (and to myself) I say, “Then you haven’t seen the production at the 5th Avenue yet.” (more...)

The Marriott Theatre continues its highly acclaimed 2009 season with Hairspray, the show the New York Post calls “A great big fat gorgeous hit!” This all-new production of the Tony Award-winning international phenomenon explodes onto the Marriott Theatre stage September 23rd. Direct from Broadway, where it played for over 2,500 performances, the production begins previews September 23rd, opens Wednesday, September 30th at 8 p.m., and runs through December 6th, 2009. Chicagoland favorite and multiple Jeff Award winner Marc Robin (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Full Monty), has been tapped to direct and choreograph.

'Jesus Christ Superstar' at The Boiler Room Theatre

Green has long been heralded as one of the region's finest music directors, while Ditty has gained a justifiably stellar reputation as one of the best choreographers around. With this production, which exemplifies the term "all-singing, all-dancing," it's apropos then that the two would share the directing credit. Obviously, from the first notes of the overture to the final tormented moments of Jesus Christ's death on the cross, the shared vision of the two men is vividly portrayed and stunningly realized. The work, widely considered the first "rock opera," is movingly exhilarating, taking audiences on a veritable rollercoaster ride of emotional highs and lows. (more...)

Perhaps the most remarkable element of Circle Players' Fame, the Musical is its talented cast--an amazing amalgam of age-appropriate actors assaying the roles in this now-iconic tale of the last four years of New York's High School of Performing Arts. Credit director Tim Larson's casting abilities for this feat which, combined with strong production values, inventive staging and laudable choreography by Kate Adams-Johnson, makes the show an excellent choice to open Circle's 60th anniversary season.
