Based on Sholem Aleichem's Tevye stories

By permission of Arnold Perl

Based on the tales by Shalom Aleichem and set in Tzarist Russia in 1905, this touching musical tells the story of Tevye, a poor milkman, who must weigh his family's happiness against the traditions that have preserved a way of life in his village for centuries. His eldest daughters want to marry for love rather than an auspicious match, and outside political forces threaten everything he holds dear. The beloved score with a book by Joseph Stein, Music by Jerry Bock and Lyrics by Sheldon Harnick celebrates 50 years in 2014.

STAGE TUBE: On This Day for 12/28/15 - FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
by Nicole Rosky - Dec 28, 2015

Today in 1976, the first Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof opened at the Winter Garden Theatre. Featuring music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and book by Joseph Stein, the story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and Jewish religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. The original Broadway production of the show, which opened in 1964, had the first musical theatre run in history to surpass 3,000 performances. It spawned four Broadway revivals, a successful 1971 film adaptation, and the show has enjoyed enduring international popularity. It is also a very popular choice for school and community productions. In celebration of this day, we bring you Zero Mostel's performance of 'If I Were a Rich Man.' Click below to check it out!

The magnificent score includes 'I Could Have Danced All Night,' 'On the Street Where You Live,' 'Wouldn't It Be Loverly,' and 'I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face.' For Rubicon's production, Director James O'Neil returns to the source material to explore the Shavian themes of class struggle, social reform and women's rights.
