Itzhak Perlman, the reigning virtuoso of the violin, took a trip to Anatevka last night when he attended the Off-Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof, which is performed entirely in Yiddish. An Israeli-American who was born in Tel-Aviv, Perlman has frequently played the John Williams arrangement of 'Excerpts from Fiddler on the Roof' in his concerts.

Fiddler On the Roof brings the Menier Chocolate Factory to the Playhouse Theatre. As the audience enters, the walls are bedecked with hangings as drab as most of the costumes - the wardrobe is black, save for prayer shawls and wedding garb.

The word 'meshugge' seemed to really pop out for the audience, receiving a big laugh when uttered by Tevye the night this reviewer thoroughly enjoyed the beautifully acted and sung National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene's production of Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick and Joseph Stein's classic 1964 musical based on the stories of Sholem Aleichem, Fiddler on the Roof.
