Performances begin in just five weeks for the third annual Next Up, continuing Steppenwolf Theatre Company's commitment to Chicago's next generation of theater artists. Next Up features three productions presented in rotating repertory, in collaboration with Northwestern University's MFA programs in Direction and Design. Next Up 2013 showcases the work of graduates of those programs with casts of professional Chicago actors-including nine alumni of the School at Steppenwolf: Fat Pig by Neil LaBute, directed by David Prete; The Drunken City by Adam Bock, directed by Johnny Michael DiResta; and The Internationalist by Anne Washburn, directed by Erin Murray. Classic Stage Company, under the leadership of Artistic Director Brian Kulick and Executive Director Greg Reiner, presents Bertolt Brecht's THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE featuring Christopher Lloyd (Azdak), directed by Brian Kulick (who directed Brecht's Galileo last season), and featuring new music by Tony Award-winning singer/songwriter Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening). Two-time Tony Award-winner Mark Rylance (Jerusalem, Boeing-Boeing) will star on Broadway in two startlingly different performances in repertory: as the suddenly love struck noblewoman Olivia in Twelfth Night and as the ruthless and conniving title monarch in Richard III. The critically heralded all-male Shakespeare's Globe productions of Twelfth Night and Richard III, which delighted audiences and broke all box office records in London's West End earlier this year, will openSunday, November 10 at the Belasco Theatre (111 West 44th Street), with previews beginning October 15. The Old Globe today announced THINKING SHAKESPEARE LIVE!, a 90-minute presentation exploring the language of Shakespeare, on Saturday, June 15 at 11 a.m. Led by Old Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein and assisted by three professional classical actors, this special program based on Edelstein's book, THINKING SHAKESPEARE: A HOW-TO GUIDE FOR STUDENT ACTORS, DIRECTORS, AND ANYONE ELSE WHO WANTS TO FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE WITH THE BARD, will reveal a performer's approach to Shakespearean language so audiences may easily understand the poetry of the Bard. An ideal introduction to Shakespeare for families and young audiences, THINKING SHAKESPEARE LIVE! will take place on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Harvey Fierstein to Write and Star in Untitled Play for 2014 Broadway Season

Harvey Fierstein has written Tony nominated musicals for the past two seasons, and according to an interview with the Observer, there is a play on the way for next spring. A still-untitled new play will come to Broadway in Spring 2014. He told the Observerer: 'I wrote the role for myself, but it's an ensemble piece, a cast of nine. I would like to play it, but I think I hurt A Catered Affair by being in it. I think I threw the balance off because I was the playwright-and I actually wrote that role for Joel Grey, too. It's an ensemble so the focus should not be on my character.' (more...)

The Conseil des arts de Montreal en tournee and Repercussion Theatre are pleased to announce the 2013 Shakespeare-in-the-Park (SITP) tour of A Midsummer Night's Dream, beginning July 7th and continuing through August 4th, 2013. In addition to the various Montreal and surrounding-area parks, SITP will visit Hemmingford and Morin Heights and for the first time, Reford Gardens in Grand-Metis and Douglass Beach (Plage de Ville de Lac Brome) in Knowlton.
