Arena Stage presents Charles Ludlam's comic masterpiece The Mystery of Irma Vep. This clever, quick-change marathon ransacks literary, cinematic and pop culture as it satirizes everything from Hitchcock's Rebecca and classic horror film The Mummy's Curse to Wuthering Heights and Shakespeare. Arena Stage is excited to welcome back Brad Oscar (Broadway's Spamalot and The Producers, Arena's Cabaret and Damn Yankees) and J. The Flea Theater presents the World Premiere of Lower Ninth, a new play inspired by the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Written by Beau Willimon, this new drama will be directed by Daniel Goldstein, and will feature Gaius Charles, James McDaniel and Gbenga Akkinagbe. Adaptors Gregory Sherman and Gregory Wolfe (who also directs) craft a new script exclusively out of lines from Shakespeare's text, resetting famous scenes and reassigning classic quotations into new contexts and creating a modern day setting where the Prince of Denmark is imprisoned in a mental institution, a surveillance camera fixed on him 24/7, for the murder of Polonius.
