In 1942, a teenage Sarah Vaughan won the Apollo Theater's amateur singing competition in a performance that was a launching pad for a career that transformed one of America's original art forms and elevated the craft of jazz vocal music. Seventy years later, Vaughan's legacy continues to resonate and will be celebrated with the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, part of the TD James Moody Democracy of Jazz Festival at NJPAC and at venues around Vaughan's hometown of Newark, N.J. Philadelphia Experimental Theater Company Unveils Online Theatre Project FRAME

Philadelphia's theater research company - New Paradise Laboratories - announces today the launch of FRAME, its online performance-based platform. NPL is celebrating the event with a party tonight at 7:00 pm at its space in The Maas Building, a multi-use arts facility in Northern Liberties. This website (www.newparadiselaboratories.org) is NPL's organizational online home. It has reached Over 21,000 unique visitors for 31,000 views worldwide in its year of beta-testing. Funded in part by PEW Charitable Trusts, the project allows NPL to exercise its creative mission online. (more...)

At 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, Ravinia Music Director James Conlon leads an all-Tchaikovsky program with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and piano virtuoso Denis Matsuev. Violin virtuoso Joshua Bell returns to perform with the CSO at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25. The program will include the Overture to Barber's The School for Scandal, Op. 5, and Violin Concerto Op. 14; Shostakovich's Symphony No. 9 in E-flat Major, Op. 70; and Ravel's Tzigane Concert Rhapsody. Bell, who debuted with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of 14, is a Grammy Award-winner and a Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame inductee. Soloists from the CSO appear in an intimate Martin Theatre concert at 8 p.m. on Monday, July 23, led by Conlon and featuring soprano Rachel Schutz in her Ravinia debut. (more...)
