Velazquez Painting from Italy's Galleria Estense Goes on View for the First Time at the Metropolitan Museum This Spring

Velazquez's Portrait of Duke Francesco I d'Este, one of the great portraits of the 17th century from one of the most prestigious regional museums in Italy, will be on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from April 16 through July 14. This special loan, which has never before traveled to the United States, will also coincide with and celebrate the May opening of the Metropolitan Museum's renovated New European Paintings Galleries, 1250-1800. The painting is temporarily leaving its home during the closure of the Galleria Estense in Modena due to damages sustained during the severe earthquake in the Emilia Romagna region in May 2012. Not only the Girl with a Pearl Earring, the International Court of Justice, The Royal Family, and the best herring sandwich in the world, but most important to dance lovers, The Hague is home to one of the world's most celebrated dance companies, Nederlands Dans Theater. New York audiences will get a chance to witness firsthand the much-storied and spectacular 30-member contemporary dance troupe-in New York for the first time in nearly a decade-when it performs at The David H. Koch Theater, April 11 and 12, and as part of the The Joyce Theater Gala on April 10. In all, the company will present three New York premieres, each a collaboration between NDT's new Artistic Director Paul Lightfoot and its Resident Choreographer Sol Leon. (more...)

Lincoln Center Theater previously announced that Betsy Aidem, Blair Brown, Michael Cerveris, Anthony Cochrane, Lauren Culpepper, Alvin Epstein, Kathryn Erbe, John Glover, Jennifer B. Grace, Katie Kreisler, Stephen Kunken, Haviland Morris, Dale Place, John Procaccino, Gareth Saxe and Alan Schmuckler would be featured in the 18-member cast of its world premiere production of NIKOLAI AND THE OTHERS, a new play by Richard Nelson. The play, which was commissioned by Lincoln Center Theater, will be directed by David Cromer and will begin performances tonight, April 4 at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater.
