Legally Blonde's Sheridan Smith stars in the Old Vic's production of HEDDA GABLER by Henrik Ibsen, in a version by Brian Friel directed by Anna Mackmin. The show begins previews tonight, 5th of September and opens on the 12th for a run until the 10th of Novemeber. (more...)


Shakespeare Theatre of NJ Kicks Off 50th Season with HENRY IV, PART ONE, 5/30-6/24

The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey will launch its 2012 milestone 50th Anniversary season with William Shakespeare's saga of a young prince's reformation and ascent to manhood - Henry IV, Part One. Considered one of Shakespeare's most popular history plays, this rousing tale has not been produced on The Shakespeare Theatre stage in 20 years. Henry IV, Part One begins performances on May 30 and runs through June 24 at the Theatre's Main Stage - the F. M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre. All tickets, including discounted ticket packages are now on sale. For tickets or for more information, call the box office at 973-408-5600 or visit www.ShakespeareNJ.org. The F.M. Northern Broadsides Announce English Tour of Gogol's THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR, Sept-Dec

After the critical success of Accidental Death of an Anarchist, Northern Broadsides' resisdent director Conrad Nelson and playwright Deborah McAndrew once again team up to bring their unique brand of Northern inventiveness and humour to the stage with A Government Inspector, a Yorkshire take on Gogol's fantastical satire The Government Inspector. Created in partnership with Harrogate Theatres, the production premieres at Harrogate Theatre from 7 - 22 September before embarking on an English national tour until December 1st. Dario Fo's 1970 play, "Accidental Death of an Anarchist" with it's anti-establishment rhetoric certainly has connections to items in the news today what with the occupy movement and people's disillusionment with the government. But the problem that the current production of the play from Strawberry Theatre Workshop has is that they don't trust the audience to make those connections and instead feel the need to jam them into the script and beat us over the head with them. And while the show is funny and has some amazing performances it also at times comes across as self indulgent and lacking commitment. (more...)

Damian Cruden's Enormous YORK MYSTERY PLAYS Production Set for August, York

The York Mystery Plays, a medieval cycle of plays which have been performed by the people of York for hundreds of years, will return to the city this year on an epic scale from 2 to 27 August. As well as a cast of professional actors, over 2,500 people will be involved in the staging of this production including over 1,500 local volunteers as the two casts of community ensemble, musicians, choir and crew. Following hard on the heels of a successful revival of Dario Fo's Accidental Death of an Anarchist, Strawberry Theatre Workshop continues what's being described as 'a season of agitation and propaganda' with a second company classic, This Land | Woody Guthrie, a play for actors and puppets derived from the music, drawing, and writing of folk artist Woody Guthrie.
