ONE TOUCH OF VENUS Kicks Off Bayou City Concert Musicals' 2012-13 Season, 9/6

Bayou City Concert Musicals kicks off its 2012-13 season with a fully-staged concert version of the classic musical, One Touch of Venus, for five performances at the Heinen Theatre, 3517 Austin, September 6-9, 2012. "It seems strange," says BCCM Artistic Director Paul Hope, "to say a show written in the 1940s can be a Houston premiere, but One Touch of Venus has never before been seen on a Houston stage. Sophie B. Hawkins to Lead Janis Joplin Musical at Macha Theatre, 10/4-21

Acclaimed filmmaker Gigi Gaston's ROOM 105 - a new musical show starring Grammy-nominated Sophie B. Hawkins - is a thoughtful and entertaining tribute to legendary soul singer Janis Joplin. The show is a humorous, engaging, bittersweet, intimate and honest musical confessional. Janis brings the audience into her world and her life, and teases viewers about aspects of modern day pop culture, of which she is privy. A modern-day retrospective on Joplin's turbulent life, telling a story that reveals the iconic singer's thoughts on love, sex, fame and belonging. The show will premiere on October 4, the very night of the anniversary of Janis Joplin's death, at the Macha Theatre-- blocks away from Barney's Beanery where she had her last drink before her untimely death, joining the infamous 27 club. Feinstein's at Loews Regency will continue its Fall 2012 season with the return of singer and television star Linda Purl, in her new show "Midnight Caravan: Travels through the Great New York Clubs." Recapturing the glamour of New York's swank hotspots like The Copacabana and The Blue Angel, Purl invokes the smoky, after-hours world of the 1940s and 50s. With musical direction by Tedd Firth, "Midnight Caravan" includes songs such as "Easy Living," "I Thought About You," and "My Romance," to name just a few. (more...)

The Plowmen Present SOLDIER at HERE, Beginning 12/11

The Plowmen will present the World Premiere of Soldier, written and performed by Jonathan Draxton, and directed by Kevin O'Rourke (Mayor Edward Bader on HBO's "Boardwalk Empire"). Soldier runs from December 11 - 22, 2012 in a limited engagement at HERE, located at 145 6th Avenue (Enter on Dominick, 1 block south of Spring) in New York City. Sanaa Lathan to Lead BY THE WAY, MEET VERA STARK at Geffen Playhouse; Full Cast Announced!

Stage and screen star Sanaa Lathan (A Raisin in the Sun, Contagion) returns to the title role in Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage's By the Way, Meet Vera Stark for its West Coast premiere at the Geffen Playhouse. Lathan, who originated the character of Vera Stark in the critically acclaimed New York run, will once again take the stage as the 1930's era maid turned movie star, reunited with original cast member Kimberly Hebert Gregory (Spike Lee's Red Hook Summer) reprising her role as fellow aspiring African American actress Lottie. Broadway vet and Geffen alum Merle Dandridge (Spamalot, Rent, Aida) will take on the spicy role of Anna Mae, who fakes a Brazilian accent for a slice of fame, and former leading lady of ABC's Man Up, Amanda Detmer, will portray Gloria Mitchell, the white starlet dubbed "America's little sweetie pie" and Vera's first employer. Helmed by award-winning director Jo Bonney, the West Coast premiere cast also features Kevin Carroll (Paid in Full, Being John Malkovich), Spencer Garrett (Iron Man 3, Air Force One) and Geffen alum Mather Zickel (Extraordinary Chambers, Rachel Getting Married). Michael Xavier, Jenna Russell and More Star in SOHO CINDERS World Premiere at Soho Theatre Tonight, Aug 2

Following the sold-out concert performance of Soho Cinders at the Queen's Theatre in October 2011, Stiles & Drewe's new musical receives its world premiere at Soho Theatre running from tonight, 2nd August to 9th September 2012.
