BWW Reviews: TUTS' Amazing MAN OF LA MANCHA Reaches the Unreachable Starby David Clarke - Mar 1, 2013The Spanish Inquisition was a harrowing and dark time in history. It has been the fodder for countless novels, plays, and books. Yet, I never had much faith that a musical would be a good medium to explore that horrific era. I figured I wouldn't enjoy the 1965 musical adaptation of Miguel de Cervantes Don Quixote. Certainly some of the classics appeal to me, but the darker, rawer, more edgy musicals are the ones that I really love. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think upon seeing MAN OF LA MANCHA for the first time that it would find a place in the Parthenon of my favorite musicals. However, Theatre Under the Stars' (TUTS) marvelous production has ensured that this gem of a show will forever have a safe and warm spot in my heart. (more...)

BWW Reviews: GOD OF CARNAGE - An Unforgettable Wild Rideby David Clarke - Feb 23, 2013Stark Naked Theater Company's production of Yasmina Reza's GOD OF CARNAGE, which was translated from its original French into English by Christopher Hampton, is one wild roller coaster of a ride that will leave audiences simultaneously speechless and breathless. Last night's opening night audience elicited the most real and completely guttural responses to the over-the-top, laugh a second show that I have ever had the pleasure to see and be a part of during a live theatre performance. Wild peals of laughter, squeals of horror, screams of delight, and ecstatic claps filled Studio 101 as the audience was steamrolled by sheer talent and majestic magnetism for the show's entire 85 minute run time. Dr. Vincent Bellonzi Releases New Book Titled RECKLESSLY ABANDONEDby BWW News Desk - Feb 14, 2013It is estimated that ones' lifestyle is responsible for 80% to 90% of the chronic disease or vital health that they experience. Major studies indicate that 80% of cause, is factors of lifestyle, and that fraction really does not move below 50%. That means that people have a great deal of control. In the past, it was assumed that every disease was a predetermined fate whether we spoke of diabetes or cancer. Presently, researchers see that the expression of genes is controlled by epigenetics, truely how our ancestors lived as well as the choices that we make. Nutritional choices, physical activity, sleep quality, and stress management are the tools which determine disease or health. How people look, how they think and how they feel, it is the actual phenotype that is influenced. (more...)
T. Oliver Reid Visits Vintage Harlem and Eric Michael Gillett Explores the Lyrics of Lorenz Hart at 54 Below Showsby Stephen Hanks - Feb 12, 2013At last year's Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs (MAC) Awards, two of the big winners were T. Oliver Reid (photo left) for Male Debut and Eric Michael Gillett for Major Artist, Male (and both could very likely be MAC nominees again this year). Almost a year later, two of New York cabaret's leading men performed new shows one night apart at 54 Below; Reid on February 6 with Drop Me Off in Harlem, and Gillett the next night with Careless Rhapsody: An Evening Dedicated to the Lyrics of Lorenz Hart. Ironically, what the shows had in common--besides being a fairly good fit of material to singer--was that the majority of their sets featured songs written in the 1930s but in very different styles. With Reid it was the jazz, swing and blues of Harlem; with Gillette it was the romantic Broadway musical sensibility of Hart's lyrics (paired with the timeless melodies of Richard Rodgers). While neither Reid's 'Harlem,' nor Gillett's 'Hart' were stirring or spectacular shows, they were both solid and entertaining enough that both could be nominated for BroadwayWorld.com Awards in 2013.
