Eunice struggles to fit in. When she joins a wealthy family as their housekeeper the very reason for her awkwardness, long hidden and deeply buried, leads inexorably to a terrible tale of murder in cold blood on Valentine's Day. When you first start digging into the vast array of musical theatre styles and genres out there, it can be pretty overwhelming. However, don't let this trepidation stop you from jumping in with both feet. You will be amazed with the help of all the great Broadway documentaries and archived recordings available on the Internet how easy it can be to immerse yourself in these classic scores, and immerse you must. Broadway music is traditionally very self-referential, and directors expect working actors to understand basic tropes like the Act I "what do I want" ballad or the eleven o'clock gospel number. Trust me, you don't want to be the only chorus member in Urinetown to miss that "Snuff that Girl" is an affectionate tribute to "Cool" in West Side Story.

They say that hindsight is 20/20, and in the case of Broadway, time has certainly illuminated some of the injustices of Tonys past. Few creations have enjoyed the cultural longevity of Charles Addams characters The Addams Family. This satirical inversion of the typical American family was first introduced back in 1938 as a series of 150 single panel cartoons in the pages of The New Yorker that continued until Addams' death in 1988. The characters, an eccentric clan that delights in the macabre and yet are totally unaware that others find them frightening or at the very least bizarre, have been adapted for other mediums multiple times: a 1964 television series, the 1973 and 1998 animated series, three feature films in the '90's, five video games, a pinball machine that remains the best selling of all time and in 2010, the Broadway musical THE ADDAMS FAMILY. The musical has a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and is currently receiving a witty and tuneful local production at the Long Center by Summer Stock Austin.
