Tell us a bit about Rhiannon Vivian's Office Meltdown.
Rhiannon Vivian's Office Meltdown is an hour's ride of character comedy, set in an office that might be about to close. It's essentially an excuse to let a whole bunch of new characters off the leash and into the world, from the blustery MD to the rapping photocopier, and even the Ghost of a Cake that Didn't Work (she haunts the canteen). It's fun, silly, surreal but there's tons to empathise with too. I love to write characters that people feel they might have met, or maybe see a bit of themselves in!
Why bring it to Edinburgh?
I'd brought the same show for two years running (Doors To Manual) and I just wanted to try something new. I love how wonderful and also unpredictable Edinburgh audiences can be - it really is the ultimate place to bring your work and see if it flies!
What sets it apart from other shows at the Fringe?
It's a little bit weird but it's got a lot of heart, but mostly I hope the writing gets a nod. Whenever I write a character I try and make it that I don't waste a single line. I don't want there to be any 'filler'! It's like when I used to buy albums as a kid, if there was only two good songs I would get really annoyed at a wasted opportunity to make something great.
I love writing and I love how writing from a character's point of view can free you up to say whatever you like! It's very cathartic. I'm in love with language, linguistics and people too. And my god, do I enjoy writing things that people will empathise with and make them feel.
What are the benefits of performing at the Free Fringe?
It's always been incredibly supportive. The organisers to the acts and the acts to each other. I love that. I also love how people are more likely to take a punt on your show. I feel if I've learned anything in my six years going to the fringe, just saying 'free' seems to get people through the door! Then it's your job to make them stay!
I also love the diversity of audiences. One day one line will be an instant hit and the next, that line will get a titter and a completely different section will tickle that particular audience.
Who would you recommend comes to see you?
Anyone who likes gentle, surreal, silly and wry humour. If you love your comedy with emotional clout, it's for you!
