BWW speaks to the creators of Knightmare Live: The Game Has Changed ahead of its run at the 2016 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

So, for anyone too young to remember - what is Knightmare?

Knightmare is a cult fantasy TV show from the Eighties and Nineties. It spanned eight series and garnered a viewership of six million people.

At its heart, Knightmare involved teams of friends embarking on an epic quest. One player would wear the famous helmet of justice rendering them blind so they could traverse the chroma key (blue screen) dungeon environments, guided by three friends from a separate anti chamber.

It was equal parts thrilling and terrifying for children, as contestants were quickly dispatched if they didn't solve the puzzles or choose the right paths. Also at the time the effects looked amazing.

How involved do the audience get?

The Knightmare live audience get very involved.

For a start members of the public can apply to be the wearer of the helmet by writing to newtreguard@gmail.com

If you're sitting in the crowd you're encouraged to help out with puzzles and shout catchphrases and 'helpful' suggestions. For fans of the original this proves incredibly cathartic.

Who would you recommend comes to see Knightmare Live?

Knightmare Live is suitable for anyone with a penchant for the fantasy genre or an interest in gaming.

Is it still enjoyable if audiences don't remember the original show?

Even if you've never seen the original show, the rhetoric is very easy to pick up and is fully explained at the top. It's also a LOT of fun - we manage to send up the show without ridiculing it.

What's next for Knightmare Live after the Fringe?

After the Fringe I'm hoping the show will transfer to regional theatres and embark on a UK tour.

Timings and ticket information for Knightmare Live: The Game Has Changed are available on the edfringe website.
