Trinity Repertory Company, in partnership with Rhode Island Latino Arts (RILA), announces the second year of its program Shakespeare en el Verano (Shakespeare in the Summer).

This year's production premieres a new bilingual English-Spanish adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet by Brown/Trinity Rep MFA student Marcel Mascaro. Mascaro will co-direct the new adaptation featuring contemporary Spanish, new music, and a new cast with Trinity Rep associate artistic director Tyler Dobrowsky.

Romeo and Juliet will tour throughout Providence from July 7-July 31, 2017. All performances are free, open to the public and appropriate for all ages.

"I'm thrilled to build on the tremendous success of last summer and bring back our Shakespeare en el Verano program. I'm also incredibly grateful we once again get to partner with Rhode Island Latino Arts and their wonderful executive director, Marta V. Martínez," said co-director Tyler Dobrowsky. "Great art belongs to everyone-by removing the barriers of cost, location and language, we will bring this free, mobile and bilingual production of Shakespeare's classic Romeo and Juliet to the vibrant community of Providence and Rhode Island. I can't wait to get started."

"In looking at the future of bilingual theater in Rhode Island, Rhode Island Latino Arts and Trinity Rep have been having in-depth conversations about the cultural implications of our partnership," said Rhode Island Latino Arts executive director Marta V. Martínez. "Together, we are not just offering another play by Shakespeare, but we're making local theater in general more accessible to the largest and fastest-growing population in the state. The decision by Trinity Rep to join RILA and begin to offer plays in a bilingual format is a major commitment on the part of the theater to be more inclusive of a whole culture."

The diverse cast features local actors from the community, Brown/Trinity Rep MFA students and Trinity Rep Young Actors Summer Institute teaching staff and artists. The company includes Anna Basile, Anita Castillo-Halvorssen, Leandro Castro, Jack Dwyer, Jerediah González, Krystal Hernández, Orlando Hernández, Billy Hutto, Mari Martell, Olivia Miller, Ricardo Nogueras, Arturo Puentes, Dave Rabinow, Maria Rosado, Allison Russo, Marina Tejada, Sophia Washburn.

The design team includes Peter Sasha Hurowitz (sound), Steve McLellan (lights), Emily Shapiro (sets and costumes) and Jerediah González (music).

Shakespeare en el Verano is made possible by a grant from the Rhode Island Foundation, the state's community foundation, and The Providence Department of Art, Culture + Tourism, through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
