17) BWW Reviews: DR. HORRIBLE’S SING-ALONG BLOG from Balagan at ACT by Jay Irwin - January 30, 2011
What happens when you take an already wonderful show and, due to popular demand, remount it in a larger venue? Well, sometimes the results can be disastrous. But Balagan Theatre’s remount of their production of “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”, which sold out back in August, manages to take what worked before, improve upon it, and then add in the resources of ACT to create a show to rival the first. If the Six Million Dollar Man taught us anything it’s that, “We have the technology. We can make him bigger, stronger, “and even more Horrible! (more...)

Crain's New York on Musicals Fighting for the Spotlight
Crain's New York on Sunday went inside the business end of some of Broadway's upcoming musicals like CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, SISTER ACT, HOW TO SUCCEED..., WONDERLAND and PRISCILLA, along with the return of ROCK OF AGES and RAIN.
The article opens with the now prerequisite SPIDER-MAN joke, here provided by CATCH ME IF YOU CAN producer Hal Luftig suggesting putting the show's lead actor in a harness and swinging him against a wall as a way to help raise publicity for the show. Instead of that, they instead have sent out 600,000 sample CDs instead.
There's more new productions coming to Broadway this Spring than in recent memory, due to both the slow economic improvements, and a 'perfect storm' of theatres opening up for one reason or another so all will be fighting for interest, press and ticket sales.
Bring on the Spring Season!

Too Much Theatre or Too Little?
There's a debate going on in theatre land as Rocco Landesman, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts spoke on Thursday at Arena Stage during their conference about new play development (Make sure to also check out their very cool 'New Play Map' which launched as well).
At the conference, Landesman talked about the challenges that are facing some struggling theatres around the country and said that "You can either increase demand or decrease supply. Demand is not going to increase, so it's time to think about decreasing the supply."
He later defended his comments to the NY Times on Friday, noting that NEA research shows that theatre attendance has been decreasing, while the number of theatre organizations have been increasing.
Many regional theatres are now up in arms, some calling for a leadership change at the NEA, others questioning the methodology, funding, etc.
Personally, I'd love to see creative discussions about what can be done nationwide to increase demand and to get more people back up off their couches and away from their home entertainment centers to see and appreciate quality, live theatre.

Marc Shaiman: All Around Nice Guy
There's a wonderful article up on the ScotchPlains-FanwoodPatch (try reading that aloud 3 times quickly) about BroadwayWorld fave Marc Shaiman returning to visit his high school alma mater, Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School where the students are putting on his Tony-winning show - HAIRSPRAY.
Talk about things coming full circle, Shaiman spent a good deal of time with the cast, playing piano, watching a rehearsal, giving notes and, no doubt, inspiring the students as well.

Ars Nova and The Social Network
If you're more observant than I am (and most people are about this sort of thing), you might have noticed that Jesse Eisenberg is wearing an Ars Nova t-shirt on the DVD cover of THE SOCIAL NETWORK, the fantastic film in which he plays Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
While Zuckerberg (to the best of everyone's knowledge) has never been to the hip Off-Broadway venue, Jesse Eisenberg has and Adam Feldman of Time Out found an interview with him in which he discusses just how the shirt made it into the film and ultimately onto the DVD cover.
HN: Have you seen the DVD cover yet?
JE: Yes, I have. And actually, the costume designer on this movie - and you can watch this on the DVD - found every picture of every character in the movie and dressed us in our real counterpart's clothing with one exception, which is a shirt that I actually own that made it onto the cover of the DVD.
HN: Oh really? That's interesting.
JE: Yeah, it was very funny. She did it because it says ARS Nova, which is a theater company I actually work with in New York City. So she did me kind of a favor, not knowing that it would become the cover of the DVD.
