Milagro Receives $315,000 in Grant Funding

Miracle Theatre Group aka Milagro, the Northwest's premier Latino arts and culture organization, was awarded $315,000 in grants from September to December 2016 for General Operating Support and Capital Improvements, and to fund Milagro's artistic programming, arts education, and community engagement efforts.

September 15, 2016, The MJ Murdock Charitable Trust awarded Milagro with a grant of $102,000 over three years to support a new Business Manager position. The MJ Murdock Charitable Trust's mission "has been to serve individuals, families, and communities across the Pacific Northwest by providing grants and enrichment programs to organizations that strengthen the region's educational, spiritual and cultural base in creative and sustainable ways." October 5, 2016, The PGE Foundation awarded $5,000 to Milagro for Teatro Milagro's Bilingual Arts Education programming in Clackamas. The PGE Foundation works in collaboration with the community to help improve educational outcomes, inspire critical thinking through arts experiences and strengthen family stability. October 6, 2016, The Jackson Foundation Trustees approved a grant for $3,000 for General Operating Support for Milagaro's Season 33. The Jackson Foundation supports programs within the State of Oregon for charitable, educational or eleemosynary purposes and for the advancement of public welfare. October 19, 2016, at the generous recommendation of Myra Donnelley, Milagro received a $1,000 grant from The Donnelley Foundation in support of the upcoming production of "El Payaso."

October 27, 2106, Milagro received a $1,000 contribution from On Point Community Credit Union to support the annual community event, Posada Milagro. Each month, the On Point Community Relations Committee awards donations and directs community participation to help empower people to improve the quality of their lives.

November 15, 2016, the Emil W and Lois E Brammert Fund and the Fred W Fields Fund of The Oregon Community Foundation together awarded Milagro a grant in the amount of $35,000 to support capital improvements to El Centro Milagro's public spaces, theatre, and exterior in order to improve accessibility and amenities for arts and community partners that make use of the facility. "In 2015 The Oregon Community Foundation distributed more than $103 million in grants and scholarships. That money went to programs for children and families, education and scholarships, arts and culture, and community engagement. November 14, 2016, the Meyer Memorial Trust approved a grant of $100,000 for operating support for Milagro's creative programs at home and in the community as part of MMT's "Building Community" Portfolio. The Building Community portfolio is focused on improving conditions for communities of color, Oregonians living on low incomes and other marginalized populations. The singular goal: to help all Oregonians contribute to building vibrant communities, influence the decisions that affect them and reach their full potential.

November 30, 2016, the City Council of the City of Portland approved a one-time recommendation from the Special Appropriations Committee in the amount of $50,000 to support capital construction costs for Milagro's public space facilities improvement. The committee received 81 applications for five different funding categories: Limited Term Special Events, Arts and Culture, Expanding Economic Opportunities for Portlanders, Community Health, and Opportunities for Youth. November 30, 2016, Milagro received a grant in the amount of $8,000 from the Bloomfield Family Fund to support a Jackson County UNIDAD bilingual theatre residency in March of 2017. The committee wrote, "In acknowledging the risks facing the community and the Board's admiration for Milagro's creativity and depth of programming for the community they serve, the Board voted to fund in excess of the grant request."

December 13, 2016, National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $30 million in grants as part of the NEA's first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2017. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $10,000 to Milagro for the creation and production of a Spanish-language musical, Óye Oyá for its Season 33. The Art Works category focuses on the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and the strengthening of communities through the arts. "The arts are for all of us, and by supporting organizations such as Milagro, the National Endowment for the Arts is providing more opportunities for the public to engage with the arts," said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. "Whether in a theater, a town square, a museum, or a hospital, the arts are everywhere and make our lives richer."
