Tony nominee Stephen Mo Hanan stars in the circus-inspired reinvention of 'The Megile of Itzik Manger,' the Drama Desk Award-winning National Yiddish Theatre - Folksbiene's spring mainstage production at the Baruch Performing Arts Center. Playing Off-Broadway for a four-week limited engagement from tonight, April 21 to May 12, the eye-popping purimshpiel carnival musical is directed by Motl Didner, with music direction by Zalmen Mlotek. The opening, sponsored by the Boston Beer Company, is set for Thursday April 25 at 7:30pm. (more...)

National Yiddish Theatre's THE GOLDEN LAND Closes Off-Broadway Today

The critically acclaimed Off-Broadway musical "The Golden Land," which vividly evokes Jewish immigrant life in New York from the 1880's to the 1940's, ends its brief but storied run Off-Broadway today, January 6, 2013. The beat-the-odds hit from the National Yiddish Theatre - Folksbiene, now in its historic 98th consecutive season, added an additional three weeks after it original truncated run concluded on December 2. It will have played 41 performances, including three previews. (more...)

The critically acclaimed tuner from the National Yiddish Theatre - Folksbiene will resume performances from tonight, December 19 to January 6, after concluding its announced five-week run on Sunday, December 2. Have you ever wondered what might have happened to Tevya and Golde and their whole mishpucha had there been a sequel to Fiddler on the Roof?
Well, the National Yiddish Theatre-Folksbiene's production of The Golden Land may be the most unique way to find out how immigrant Russian Jews faired on New York's Lower East Side after fleeing the Czars at the end of the 19th/beginning of the 20th centuries. The English-language musical punctuated by a mostly Yiddish score is reopening Thursday, December 20 (and will run through January 6) following an initial five-week run that ended on December 2. After its first preview at the end October, Hurricane Sandy had forced the producers to cancel the next nine performances (at the Baruch Performing Arts Center, 55 Lexington Avenue at 25th Street). THE GOLDEN LAND Begins Off-Broadway This October

This fall the National Yiddish Theatre - Folksbiene will revive "The Golden Land," for five weeks, from Sunday October 28 to December 2, with an opening on Sunday November 4 at 6pm. Created by Zalmen Mlotek and Moishe Rosenfeld, and directed by Bryna Wasserman, "The Golden Land" uses period music and other source material to create 'a richly textured evocation of New York as it absorbed wave upon wave of Jewish immigrants from the 1880's into the 1910s, and again, in a second starkly different phase immediately before and after World War II.' The Segal Centre for Performing Arts and Reitmans present the all-new Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre (DWYT) production of On Second Avenue by Zalmen Mlotek and Moishe Rosenfeld. Honorary Artistic Director of the DWYT, Bryna Wasserman, returns to Montreal to co-direct this critically-acclaimed musical revue with Audrey Finkelstein, DWYT Artistic and Program Coordinator. The National Yiddish Theatre - Folksbiene stages a tribute to the legendary singer-songwriter Neil Sedaka at The Town Hall, 123 West 43rd Street, tonight, June 12 at 7:30pm. The gala concert, with performances by the Broadway actor and Israeli singer Dudu Fisher, Jay Black of Jay and the Americans, Klezmatics star Lorin Sklamberg, and the actor-singers Eleanor Reissa, Lori Wilner, Robert Abelson, Dani Marcus, and Rebecca Garfein, among many others, celebrates the wide-ranging impact of Yiddish culture on other popular cultures.
