Barrel of Monkeys Add Free 'Celebration of Authors' Set for 6/11 by BWW News Desk - May 23, 2013
The young writers from Barrel of Monkeys' Chicago Public Schools and after-school programs are honored at the 11th annual 'Celebration of Authors' on Tuesday, June 11 at 7:30 p.m. (6:30 p.m. reception). This yearly tradition features performances of a selection of the best stories from the year. Over 30 actor-educators will perform the childrens' stories on stage for the authors, their families and schoolmates. 'Celebration of Authors' is in a new location at the University of Chicago's Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, 915 E. 60th Street. The performance is free and open to the public, however seating is limited and reservations are required by calling Barrel of Monkeys at 312-409-1954. (more...)

American Opera Projects Receives NEA Funding for Two Operas by BWW News Desk - Jan 31, 2012
American Opera Projects (AOP) announces that composer Huang Ruo's The Weeping Camel and composer Gregory Spears's Paul's Case are awarded $10,000 each from the National Endowment of the Arts's ART WORKS initiative to support developmental workshop productions with AOP and producing partners. Both operas will be developed through AOP's First Chance series that presents concert readings of new operas in an intimate format that allows for direct conversation between audience and artist. Operas that receive fully-staged premieres after passing through First Chance include Tarik O'Regan's Heart of Darkness (London's Royal Opera House), Jorge Martín's Before Night Falls (Fort Worth Opera), and Stephen Schwartz's Séance on a Wet Afternoon (New York City Opera, Opera Santa Barbara), among many others. Aurora Theatre Company continues its 19th season with Minneapolis-based playwright Allison Moore's COLLAPSE. This surprising comedy, which originated as one of Aurora Theatre Company's Global Age Project (GAP) finalists last season, is the second main stage production to develop from the GAP; it will receive its main stage debut as a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere, a collaboration with Aurora Theatre Company (lead theater), Curious Theatre in Denver, and Kitchen Dog Theater in Dallas. Utilizing the pianos placed around the city for the 'Play Me, I'm Yours' program, the scene from Paul's Case, by composer Gregory Spears and librettist Kathryn Walat, will feature tenors Thomas Wazelle and Dorian Balis as two turn-of-the-twentieth dandies on the loose in New York City for the first time in their lives.
