Anyone who’s been even the least bit concerned about the future of musical theater, in general, or the status of Belmont University Musical Theatre, in particular, need worry no more. The multi-talented triple threats studying on the Nashville campus, under the tutelage of program coordinator Nancy Allen and her team of top-flight educators, are proof that musical theater as we know it continues to flourish even in the darkest and most difficult of times.

Described as “spellbinding” by The New York Times and “art pop of the Björk variety” by BrooklynVegan, Shrines is the moniker of Brooklyn-based singer and musician Carrie Erving (Ponyhof, Will Butler). Shrines' debut EP, Release, was produced by Rosana Cabán (of Psychic Twin) and released in November 2019.

Sundance Institute, a nonprofit organization that provides and preserves the space for independent artists in film, theatre, and media to create and thrive, and Ucross, a prestigious artist residency program and creative laboratory for the arts, and have announced seven fellows participating in the 21st annual Sundance Institute Artist Residency at Ucross in Wyoming, currently taking place February 3-21, 2020. This year, the retreat was renamed (formerly the Sundance Institute Playwrights & Composers Retreat) to reflect its cross-disciplinary structure.
SHRINES Comes to National Sawdust

Irish Arts Center, the multidisciplinary center dedicated to bringing people of all backgrounds together through the excellence and dynamism of Irish arts and culture, co-presents Shrines (Carrie Erving) with National Sawdust at National Sawdust on Wednesday, February 19. Shrines - the moniker for Brooklyn-based singer, composer and musician Carrie Erving - mixes dance and visual design elements with ethereal vocals, string arrangements, synth drones, and electronic flourishes in an evening of original songs from her debut EP, Release, produced by Rosana Cabán (of Psychic Twin). The EP draws on influences from her eclectic background in opera, rock, Irish folk, and electronic music. She'll also perform selections from her forthcoming album Our Ship is Ready, a collection of reimagined songs from the Irish Sean-nós song tradition. Shrines has drawn comparisons to Sylvan Esso, Björk, and Sinead O'Connor.

Street Theatre Company's production of the Hunter Bell-Jeff Bowen musical [title of show] opens tonight to run through June 23 - and last night I was part of the preview audience, having been invited to come review the show for those of you still reading (all the while scoffing at my apparent self-indulgence and wishing I would just get to the point).
