Over at MamaDrama, we’ve had the honor of working with PLAYTIME, the first-ever childcare service for theatre-going parents. We’ve been wowed time and again by the incredible new work going on at Playwrights Horizons, Signature Theatre and the Westside Theatre while our kids enjoyed an afternoon or evening of the arts with the incredible “Artisitters” from Sitters Studio…the babysitting service that sends professional artists, actors, musicians, dancers and the like to your home to care for and inspire your child. So when I heard that Sitters Studio founder Kristina Wilson was producing a play for kids, my little guy and I couldn’t wait to check it out. (more...)

The new musical comedy The Last Smoker in America will get its New York premiere this summer, it was announced today. The Last Smoker in America, with book and lyrics by Tony Award® Nominee Bill Russell (Side Show) and music by Drama Desk Nominee Peter Melnick (Adrift in Macao), will be directed by Tony Award-winning producer and director Andy Sandberg (Hair; Gore Vidal’s The Best Man) and choreographed by Tony Award® nominee AC Ciulla (Footloose). Performances begin Wednesday, July 11, 2012 upstairs at the Westside Theatre (407 West 43rd Street), with an official Opening Night set for Thursday, August 2, 2012. Piece by Piece productions, Rising Phoenix Repertory, and Rattlestick Playwrights Theater have announced that the world premiere of 3C, written by David Adjmi and directed by Jackson Gay, will begin performances Wednesday, June 6 at 7pm at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, 224 Waverly Place. THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS, the provocative and wickedly funny theatrical adaptation of the C.S. Lewis novel about spiritual warfare from a demon’s point of view, will return to Irvine by popular demand for a limited engagement at the Irvine Barclay Theatre, 4242 Campus Drive, adjacent to University of California Irvine, from July 12 through July 15. The production sold out five performances at the same venue in July 2011. (more...)

You might not expect a theatre company named Zombie Joe’s Underground would be the typical place to find a fairy tale play based on the Brothers Grimm characters. What you would expect to find is Grand Guignol horror done up in genius ZJ fashion in productions like their long-running URBAN DEATH and ATTACK OF THE ROTTING CORPSES. This unique group of artists, however, loves to delve into worlds beyond the norm and explore them from a new perspective. (more...)
