Last night The Stella Adler Studio of Acting held its Seventh Annual Stella by Starlight Benefit Gala at The Players Club in New York City. This year’s honorees included Harry Belafonte, James Earl Jones, Daryl Roth, Ed Schultz and Masa Tanaka. Notable attendees included co-chair of the evening, Kate Mulgrew, and Broadway director George C. Wolfe who presented producer Daryl Roth with her award. Check out photos from the event below! Nigel Lythgoe to Chair 2012 BAFTA Los Angeles Britannia Awards

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles® (BAFTA Los Angeles), which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, announced today that American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance producer Nigel Lythgoe will chair the Britannia Committee, which oversees the production of the Britannia Awards. The 2012 Britannia Awards will take place on Wednesday, November 7 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. (more...)

Stephen Sondheim Documentary in the Works; James Lapine to Executive Produce

Cindy Adams writes in today's New York Post that James Lapine will executive produce a documentary on Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim. The Cinetopia International Film Festival Set for 5/31-6/3

Jane Lynch, Carol Burnett Set for BACKSTAGE AT THE GEFFEN, 6/4

Emmy Award winning actress Jane Lynch will host this year’s Backstage at the Geffen fundraiser, which recognizes leadership in the theater community while raising support for the theater’s artistic and outreach initiatives, honoring Hollywood legend Carol Burnett and Chairman and CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment Jim Gianopulos. Ms. Burnett will receive the Distinction in Theater Award and Mr. Gianopulos will be presented with the Distinction in Service Award by entertainment icon and longtime colleague Warren Beatty. The star-studded event will be co-chaired by Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company Robert A. Iger and his wife, journalist Willow Bay. This irreverent evening of laughter, music and stories, which is sponsored by City National Bank, will be held on Monday June 4, 2012 at the Geffen Playhouse. (more...)

Baltimore Playwrights Festival Announces Play Reading Festival

Beginning at 11:00 a.m. plays to be read are Raising David Walker by Peter Snoad, followed at 1:00 p.m. by Lethal Injection by Michael Reimann, and at 3:00 p.m. by Our Lady of Sandwich by Mario Baldessari and Keith Bridges. After each reading there will be a discussion of the script with the playwright, director and actors. The event is free, and the general public is encouraged to attend. (more...)

Stephen Sondheim, known for contributing some of the most beloved musicals of all time to the musical theater canon, is not shy about expressing his dismay with the current Broadway and West End offerings in the UK Times. Of the selections du jour he says: "There is an anodyne homogeneity that governs Broadway musicals, so I don’t see many. There’s nothing wrong with having a lot of commercial crap as long as you have something else. Unfortunately, nearly everything on Broadway is commercial crap. The same is true of the West End. When I scan what’s on, my heart sinks into my boots.” (more...)
