Today, as a sideline to this weekendÂ’s extensive, exhaustive and exclusive InDepth InterView Tony Awards Edition: Jeff Calhoun, we are shining a special spotlight on the career of Calhoun on the Great White Way thus far with an electrifying collection of clips beginning with his collaborations with master director/choreographer Tommy Tune on THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES - todayÂ’s 2012 Tony Awards Clip Countdown dedicatee - and BUSKER ALLEY, through to his directorial debut with GREASE and his subsequent work on ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, BELLS ARE RINGING, TABOO, GREY GARDENS, BIG RIVER, NINE-TO-FIVE and this yearÂ’s twofer of new musicals that he directed and choreographed, the recently-closed BONNIE & CLYDE and the still-running mega-hit NEWSIES. As a performer, Calhoun appeared in Tune productions like MY ONE AND ONLY and THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS - as well as the montage film ARIA - but, unquestionably, he is most well-known and best-loved by Broadway babies for his visionary work on so many new and original musicals, as well as some stupendous revivals along the way, as well. Judy Kuhn and Melissa Errico Set to Lead PASSION at Classic Stage Company in 2013

Classic Stage Company, under the leadership of Artistic Director Brian Kulick and Executive Director Greg Reiner announced today that acclaimed/awarding winning actresses Judy Kuhn and Melissa Errico will star as Fosca and Clara in the companyÂ’s new production of Stephen Sondheim and James LapineÂ’s Tony Award-winning musical PASSION, to be directed by John Doyle (the Tony Award-winning revivals of SondheimÂ’s Sweeney Todd and Company). PASSION is slated to begin performances in February, 2013. Additional casting will be announced in the coming weeks and months, as well as full creative team. PASSION opened on Broadway in May of 1994 and received the Tony Award that year for Best Musical. ( more...)

FLOYD COLLINS Coming to Charlotte, 4/12-5/12

The Carolina Actors Studio Theatre (CAST) in Charlotte, North Carolina will present the regional premiere of FLOYD COLLINS April 12-May 12, 2012. The musical by playwright Tina Landau and composer Adam Guettel is based on the true story of the heroic, but ultimately unsuccessful, struggle to free explorer Floyd Collins from a Kentucky cave in 1925. The tragedy was covered by newspapers throughout the United States for two weeks, and drew thousands of spectators to the remote rescue site, making it one of the most sensational news events of the early 20th century and inspiring one of the most unusual stage productions ever written. Paula Vogel’s A CIVIL WAR CHRISTMAS Available Now in Paperback

Theatre Communications Group (TCG) today announced the publication of Paula Vogel’s pageant play for all seasons, A Civil War Christmas: An American Musical Celebration. This volume features a conversation between the author and noted historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, commentary on the music of the Civil War and its singing soldiers and excerpts from historical journals such as that of Walt Whitman. A Civil War Christmas, declared “The Best Play of the Year” by the Hartford Courant, premiered in 2008 at Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, CT under the direction of Tina Landau.

'How Glory Goes' to Play at The Laurie Beechman, 4/6-9

The Ira Brind School of Theater Arts at the University of the Arts is to collaborate with itsÂ’ own student run theater organization, Blurring Edges: A Cabaret Series to produce How Glory Goes, an evening of music pulling from the cannon of musical theater composer Adam Guettel. Faculty member Bill Buddendorf is set to direct alongside guest music director Darius Smith, who hails from Washington D.C. Steppenwolf Theatre Company Artistic Director Martha Lavey announced today the 2012/13 Subscription Season, including a Steppenwolf-commissioned world premiere and the work of fifteen ensemble members. The season begins in SteppenwolfÂ’s Downstairs Theatre with David Lindsay-AbaireÂ’s Good People, directed by ensemble member K. Todd Freeman. Up next, ensemble member Anna D. Shapiro directs The Motherf**ker with the Hat by Stephen Adly Guirgis. In the Upstairs Theatre, ensemble member Austin Pendleton directs The Birthday Party by Harold Pinter. In April 2013, ensemble member Tina Landau directs the Steppenwolf-commissioned world premiere of Head of Passes by ensemble member Tarell Alvin McCraney, their first collaboration since the widely-praised The Brother/Sister Plays (2010). The season concludes with Belleville by Amy Herzog, directed by Anne Kauffmann. ( more...)
