THE 24 HOUR PLAYS: THE NATIONALS Set for 8/7-10

The 24 Hour Company, which produces The 24 Hour Plays on Broadway, The 24 Hour Musicals, and 24 Hour Play festivals around the world, is working with longtime collaborator The New School for Drama to bring The 24 Hour Plays: The Nationals to New York City from August 7 through 10, 2013. Six writers, six directors, six producers, and 24 actors will be chosen for the project. After two days of intensive workshops, the assembled team will produce their own 24 Hour Plays at a theater in Manhattan. The program is open to high school students, college students and recent college graduates aged 16 to 24. Submissions are due on May 1.
'It's a great opportunity for young artists to meet their peers and begin building the relationships that will serve them throughout their careers,' says 24 Hour Plays founding producer Tina Fallon. 'We are seeking the very best of the next generation of theater artists - and we will arm them with what they need to find their way in this business. Which is to say: each other.' (more...)

Ben Folds to Write Short Musical for THE 24-HOUR MUSICALS at the Gramercy, 4/28-29

According to The New York Times, singer and pianist Ben Folds is set to participate in The Exchange and 24 Hour Company's 'The 24-Hour Musicals' 2013 edition. Folds will write a 15-minute musical, which will be cast, rehearsed and performed in just one day, beginning April 28 and continuing through April 29 at the Gramercy Theater in NYC. (more...)

The New School for Drama Introduces BFA in Dramatic Arts

-The New School for Drama has announced a new Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dramatic Arts, which will launch in fall 2013. Drawing on The New School's tradition of progressive artistic inquiry and civic engagement, the BFA is a pre-professional degree that emphasizes collaborative studio work and hands-on experience with working theater artists in New York City. Led by playwright and Artistic Director Jon Robin Baitz (Other Desert Cities), the BFA is guided by an Advisory Board the includes include Sarah Jessica Parker, director Doug Hughes, playwright John Guare, and 24 Hour Plays creator Tina Fallon. The Advisory Board will provide artistic, professional and fundraising support to the program. (more...)

Giving audiences an unbridled and candid look behind the scenes of the Broadway curtain, NCM(R) Fathom Events, Overnight Musicals and The Broadway League just presented 'One Night Stand: Creating a Play in a Day,' a unique one-night event broadcast to movie theaters nationwide last night, Jan. 30. This fast-paced, hilarious and entertaining film follows some of New York's top actors, including Cheyenne Jackson (30 Rock, Glee), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) and Rachel Dratch (Saturday Night Live), as well as teams of writers, composers and directors as they are given 24 hours to write, cast, compose, rehearse and perform four short musicals. At the end of the 24 hours, the musicals make their opening, and closing, night at New York City's Gramercy Theatre. The event will also present exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the stars of 'One Night Stand' as they share intimate stories of life on Broadway.

Have you heard of the 24 Hour Plays? It's a simple concept that is ridiculously complex to pull off. Every year, a big group of actors, playwrights, and directors volunteer a single day -- 24 full hours -- in which they create a night full of original theatre. It started in 1995 as a group of young theatre-makers who set out toput on a show where, as founder Tina Fallon explains, 'opening night and closing night could be at the same time, so our friends would actually show up'.
