BWW Reviews: Green Day's AMERICAN IDIOT Rocks the Hippodrome But Lacks Story

Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong, who wrote this rock opera's lyrics, and his punk rock band that created its unstoppably vibrant music weren't going for "comfortable." They were aiming, along with co-creator and director Michael Mayer (who picked up a Tony for his direction of Spring Awakening), to offer a musical production that breaks ground for its in-your-face punk rock approach to storytelling and its entirely unapologetic tale of sex, drugs and (punk) rock n' roll. And while there's lots of all of the above-and all very well done-there's not so much in the way of a plot with any depth. (more...)

Casting has been announced for the upcoming national tour of Green Day's AMERICAN IDIOT, the explosive Broadway hit called "wonderfully raucous" and "emotionally charged" by The New York Times and "flat-out electrifying" by the Boston Globe, which will make its Jacksonville premiere at the Times-Union Center's Moran Theater on Tuesday-Wednesday, May 14th -15th for two performances only. BWW Reviews: PPAC Stage Explodes with Green Day's Spectacular Rock Musical AMERICAN IDIOT

The show must go on, or so the saying says. This weekend, with a major blizzard plowing through New England, that didn't always hold true. Case in point, Providence Performing Arts Center, which had to cancel two Saturday performances of the touring production of Green Day's rock musical American Idiot. Fortunately, both of the Sunday performances went on as scheduled. Even luckier for area audiences, another show has been added for Monday evening, so there's one more opportunity to check out this stunning and intense production. (more...)

Punk band Green Day released the groundbreaking album American Idiot in 2004 to huge sales and worldwide acclaim, listening to the album it was very clear that a story was created with characters and situations, the album had a narrative, something to say. So it was not surprising when a new rock/punk musical based around the album (and the follow up) was announced for Broadway, what is surprising however is the end result, in the simplest of terms American Idiot the Musical is one of the most important musicals of the last decade and by far one of the best.
