Public Theater Announces 2013-14 Season; Jeanine Tesori's FUN HOME Musical, Richard Nelson's REGULAR SINGING Included in Line-Up! by BWW News Desk - Apr 16, 2013
Public Theater Artistic Director Oskar Eustis and Executive Director Patrick Willingham announced the line-up today for The Public's 2013-2014 season, continuing the theater's nearly 60 year tradition of producing Shakespeare and the classics, musicals, contemporary and experimental works in equal measure while engaging a wide range of audiences and artists at its six downtown theaters at Astor Place, including Joe's Pub, as well as the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. The Public's 58th season will also celebrate the 10th anniversary of the acclaimed Under the Radar Festival and the 15th anniversary of the world-renowned Joe's Pub.
'This season - whether classics, new plays, musicals or experimental ensembles - speaks to the way we live now,' said Artistic Director Oskar Eustis. 'We will bring you the triumphant return (and climax) of Richard Nelson's Apply Family Plays, the heartbreaking and gorgeous new musical Fun Home, and Tarell Alvin McCraney's thrilling Antony & Cleopatra, in a collaboration between England and America's leading Shakespeare companies. The Civilians (Steven Cosson, Artistic Director), the award-winning New York-based theater company known for projects investigating real life topics, presents Let Me Ascertain You: Occupy #S17 on September 17 at Joe's Pub. The cabaret will focus on the one-year anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, and will feature monologues and songs crafted from interviews with activists conducted by Civilians artists throughout the past year. The one-night-only performance in The Civilians' entertaining and thought-provoking style will illuminate many of the diverse individual voices behind these large-scale protests, examine how this dynamic call to action has evolved, and explore what its future holds. Renowned investigative theatre company The Civilians celebrates its 2011-2012 season with the presentation of its first ever Civilian of the Year Award. The Civilians will honor Robert Hammond, co-founder of The High Line, at its 2012 Benefit tonight, April 23rd, at the Highline Ballroom. Hammond will be feted by the company's Associate Artists as well as additional stage and screen stars in a one-night-only performance of interviews and songs by Michael J. Friedman (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson) about Hammond and the creation of The High Line, put together in The Civilians' signature investigative style. Interviewees for this unique performance include Amanda Burden (Director of the Department of City Planning), Florent Morellet (Restaurant Owner), and Bronson Van Wyck (Event Planner). (more...)
