The Houston Symphony Welcomes Conductor Hannu Lintu, 3/15-17 by BWW News Desk - Mar 06, 2013
On March 15, 16 and 17, the Houston Symphony welcomes guest conductor Hannu Lintu, baritone Stephen Powell and the Houston Symphony Chorus in a performance of Walton's Belshazzar's Feast. The concerts will begin with Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis, which features the string sections of the Symphony divided into two separate orchestras on stage. Then, the wind and percussion sections will come on stage for a full-orchestra performance of Haydn's Symphony No. 98. After intermission, Lintu will lead the Symphony musicians, Powell and the Houston Symphony Chorus on stage to close the evening with a piece which is amazing in both scope and storytelling, Walton's Belshazzar's Feast. Virginia Opera, The Official Opera Company of the Commonwealth of Virginia, announces its 2013-14 Season that features four, brand-new mainstage productions and two Special Engagement productions that span comedy, drama, farce and grand opera. The Company's 39th Subscription Season will open with Falstaff in September, followed by The Magic Flutein November, Ariadne auf Naxos in February, and Carmen in March. Special Engagements next season will include performances of The Girl of the Golden West in January and Sweeney Todd in May. (more...)

American Thymele Theatre's NYC Euripides Summer Festival Series presents Euripides' rarely staged and timely play CHILDREN OF HERCULES from August 7th thru 11th with outdoor performances at the East River Park Amphitheatre (8/7 and 8/8), the Naumburg Bandshell in Central Park (8/9) and at Theatre 500 in the Times Square Arts Center (8/11). Stephen Diacrussi directs a cast of 25 headed by Michael Raimondi, Diana Swinburne, Tara Bancroft, Stephen Powell, Nicholas Sattinger, Paul Kirchmeyr and Ian Scott. New York City Opera kicks off a new year and a new era of city-wide productions with LA TRAVIATA at the Brooklyn Academy of Music from Feb. 12-18. The Jonathan Miller production of Verdi's masterpiece is the season's first NYC Opera staging at BAM, and is followed by the US premiere performances of Rufus Wainwright's Prima Donna from Feb. 19-25. As a gift to the City of New York, The Reed Foundation and The Peter Jay Sharp Foundation have bought the remaining seats for all NYC Opera performances at BAM and will offer these seats at a special $25 price to celebrate NYC Opera's new beginning.
