The National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT) announces 15 awards granted from their National Fund for New Musicals, a major funding program to support NAMT member not-for-profit theatres in their collaborations with writers to create, develop and produce new musicals. Now in its fourth year, the Fund will provide grants totaling $48,000 to 14 organizations across the country. (more...)

New Musical SPEARGROVE PRESENTS Inspired By Halted Productions Of RENT. New York Theatre Barn will present a developmental production of the new musical SPEARGROVE PRESENTS May 14-16, 2012 at The Cell in Chelsea, NYC. The musical is the company’s first commission and has book/lyrics by Sammy Buck (Like You Like It, Stinky Kids, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus) and music/lyrics by Brandon James Gwinn (Matchmaker, Matchmaker – I’m Ready to Settle). The BMI-Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop announces its Spring Smoker, a semi-annual showcase for new songs from Workshop writers. The event will be held in the 30th Floor Media Room of BMIÂ’s New York office at 7 World Trade Center/250 Greenwich Street on Thursday, April 26, at 5:30PM and is open to members of the entertainment industry as well as Workshop members. STINKYKIDS-THE-MUSICAL-MOVES-TO-THEATRE-80-20010101 The award-winning Vital Theatre Company announces the extension of STINKYKIDS, THE MUSICAL, with book and lyrics by Sammy Buck, music by Daniel S. Usually when I take my kids to see a show for BroadwayWorld Jr., I go in with the expectation that I might be slightly amused, slightly bored, and hopefully thankful that my kids had a good time. It's always a welcome surprise when the show ends up being endearing, funny and entertaining to both the kids and the parents in the audience. Not only did the adorable Stinky Kids not stink at all, they managed to make my whole family laugh. (more...)

Now that the warm weather is setting in...I mean continuing...it might seem counter-intuitive to sit your kids down in a dark theatre in the middle of the afternoon. Buttrust me, by the time Spring break rolls around, you'll have seen one playgroundtoo many and both you and your kids will be hungry for something more. That'swhen it's time to take advantage of being in (or close to) New York City and take insome awesome family theatre. Here are my top picks for Spring 2012. I've carefullyselected shows that are geared towards younger kids but not 100% annoying toparents.
