The Dramatists Guild Fund has announced this year's Madge Evans and Sidney Kingsley Award to actress Linda Lavin and playwright Lynn Nottage. The awards will be presented by Dramatists Guild Fund Board Member Terrence McNally on Monday, February 25, 2013 at an intimate salon with award-winning composer Charles Strouse. La Jolla Playhouse announces a fifth production for its 2013/14 season: the world premiere of The Tallest Tree, a new play with music written and performed by Daniel Beaty (Emergency, Through the Night), directed by Moises Kaufman (I Am My Own Wife, The Laramie Project). A co-production with Kansas City Repertory Theatre, The Tallest Tree will run in the Playhouse's Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre October 9 - November 3, 2013. Amandine, ten years in the making, is a collaboration between three of New York City's most distinctive theater artists: Winter Miller, 13P founding member who penned In Darfur (The Public Theater), among other acclaimed plays; Lance Horne, Emmy Award-winning composer and pianist known for his own work and collaborations with Alan Cumming, Amanda Palmer, Meow Meow, Sandra Bernhard and Justin Vivian Bond; and Drama Desk Award- winning director Josh Hecht (Christine Jorgensen Reveals), who specializes in new plays. Amandine is a singular love story, inspired by the incredible memoirs of Herculine Barbin, a 19th century intersex person who was raised a girl and died a man. The ensemble cast includes Broadway veterans Lea DeLaria, Nathan Lee Graham and Alexandra Silber, in a world premiere at the Cherry Lane Theatre (38 Commerce Street) main stage January 8-26, 2013. Museum of the Moving Image has announced two special programs in Changing the Picture, an ongoing series of screenings and discussions sponsored by Time Warner, Inc. The series celebrates and explores the work of film and television artists of color who are bringing diverse voices to the screen. On Monday, January 21, at 4:00 p.m., for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday, the Museum will present "Tongues Untied, True Tales Told" featuring the legendary Ruby Dee, S. Epatha Merkerson (currently featured in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln), and Barbara Montgomery (who will screen excerpts from her new film Mitote), in a "town hall" discussion about the past, present, and future of African-American women in film and television. Trinity Repertory Company announced today that celebrated stage and screen actor Kate Burton will be honored with the 2013 Pell Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts at the 17th annual Pell Awards to be held on Monday, June 10, 2013 at Trinity Rep. The annual fundraising event will be co-chaired by Joe & Michele Madden and Elizabeth 'Beppie' Huidekoper. Mrs. Nuala Pell will serve as the event's honorary chair. (more...)
