BWW Reviews: The Black Rep's Stellar Production of THE PIANO LESSON
by Chris Gibson - Jan 29, 2013

With this fourth foray into his Pittsburgh cycle, playwright August Wilson crafts another masterwork with THE PIANO LESSON. Wilson's play, once again, captures an era rich in detail in African American history, and ponders the meaning of the word legacy, and how it applies to different individuals. The Black Rep's current production is very nicely crafted and performed, and if you haven't seen it yet, there's still time. It's certainly a journey well worth taking. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Upstream Theater's Exceptional Production of CONVERSATIONS WITH AN EXECUTIONER
by Chris Gibson - Apr 27, 2012

Dedicated to bringing the world to St. Louis, Upstream Theater takes a to Poland this time for an engrossing and compelling tale based on the memoirs of Kazimierz Moczarski (adapted by artistic director Philip Boehm). It's a fascinating story based on his own experience in Warsaw, originally involved in counter-intelligence during the second World War before being imprisoned by the Stalinist Polish secret police and charged with cooperating with the enemy. With CONVERSATIONS WITH AN EXECUTIONER, Boehm and company have produced a brilliant piece of work that it well worth your time and attention. (more...)

BWW Reviews: The Black Rep's Funkadelic Production of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM
by Chris Gibson - Feb 23, 2012

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM is one of the few Shakespearean plays that's considered totally original, not owing its story to any other source other than the Bard's imagination. It's a delightful romantic comedy with fun, supernatural elements, and unlike his many tragedies and histories, nobody dies. In the hands of The Black Rep, it's been transformed into an absolutely funkadelic experience. Director Chris Anthony has set this version in the 1970's, and as such, it's filled with wildly colored clothing from that period, and features snippets of dialog and music anyone who grew up in that era will recognize. It's also superbly performed. (more...)

St. Louis Actors' Studio Presents World Premiere of Neil Labute's JUST DESSERTS
by BWW News Desk - May 21, 2011

St. Louis Actors' Studio concludes its fourth season, themed 'Angels and Demons,' with an evening that gets right to the heart of it. According to Mr. LaBute, these pieces were written '... to say something about love and life and betrayal and art and a number of other themes.... Each one for a different reason and for a different show or person or cause....along with some new material that is debuting here, these fragments of work have been performed in venues around the world but never before in this exciting combination. My task is to be true to my characters and to take my audience for a ride--I hope you all feel like that's the case when the curtain comes down (or the lights go out) and you've made it to the curtain call' (more...)

BWW Review: Mustard Seed Theatre's Engaging Premiere of TILL WE HAVE FACES
by Chris Gibson - Apr 20, 2011

It's always exciting when a reviewer gets the opportunity to see a new work premiered, and Mustard Seed Theatre is currently presenting an adaptation of the C.S. Lewis novel TILL WE HAVE FACES by playwright/director Deanna Jent, and it's a well-done and literate play that captures the prose and style of the author quite nicely. While I was always more attracted to the science fiction of C.S. Lewis, the 'Space Trilogy' in particular, I think the show has appeal beyond the fan base of Lewis, and at the sold-out performance I attended it was clear that there's definitely an audience for this material. A terrific cast under Jent's thoughtful direction brings this novel, and the mythologies that it represents, to life in fine fashion. (more...)

REVIEW: NonProphet Theater Company's Production of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW
by Chris Gibson - Oct 25, 2009

Reading the director's notes for NonProphet Theater Company's production of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW had me wondering, if indeed, 'many people have never seen the movie, much less the stage show'. I mean, I grew up during the 1960's and 70's, so I was exposed to the cult that is 'Rocky Horror' as soon as I could drive (or catch a ride) down to the Varsity Theater on Delmar for a midnight screening. But, I guess the mass proliferation of DVD's and widescreen TV's have replaced that unique communal rite of passage. (more...)
