Barksdale Theatre and Theatre IV announce that the two nonprofit theaters will formally merge effective July 1, 2012 under a new name - Virginia Repertory Theatre (Virginia Rep). With a budget exceeding $5 million, four distinct venues, and an annual audience over 550,000, Virginia Rep will become the largest professional theater and one of the largest performing arts organizations in Central Virginia along with the Richmond Ballet, Richmond Symphony, and the Virginia Opera. Barksdale and Theatre IV celebrated the announcement and the unveiling of the new Virginia Rep sign today, May 20, at the November Theatre (formerly the Empire Theatre) at 114 West Broad Street at 4:00 p.m. after the closing of Seussical, thelast mainstage children’s production under the Theatre IV name. ABC Studios announces the May/June DVD debut of four new TV series on DVD, just weeks after their season one finales on ABC-TV. The spring releases begin May 22 with the DVD debut of the paranormal thriller “The River.” The network’s hilarious “GCB” struts its stuff to DVD on June 12, and both the explosive thriller “Scandal” and the mystery-suspense sensation “Missing” head home to DVD, also on June 12. Golden Globe and Grammy Award winner and Academy Award nominee Queen Latifah has signed on to star in and executive produce the Lifetime Original Movie Event, Steel Magnolias, a television adaptation of the iconic play and 1989 film of the same name, reuniting her with her producing duo Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, from the Oscar and Golden Globe winning Chicago and Hairspray. (Zadan and Meron also produce Lifetime's Drop Dead Diva and Smash.) She will take on the role of ‘M’Lynn’ and star alongside an all-star cast that includes Tony Award winner Phylicia Rashad as ‘Clairee,’ Golden Globe and multiple Emmy winner Alfre Woodard as ‘Ouiser,’ Grammy winner Jill Scott as ‘Truvy,’ Adepero Oduye as ‘Annelle,’ and Condola Rashad as ‘Shelby.’ The announcement was made today by Nancy Dubuc, President and General Manager of Lifetime Networks. The soap returned to Dallas with the premiere of "GCB," SUNDAY, MARCH 4 (10:01-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. Beginning that same day, the ABC Music Lounge (http://abc.go.com/music-lounge/) began featuring songs from the "GCB" premiere episode and video clips from the show. Whidbey Island Center for the Arts opens 2012 with the 1987 Off-Broadway comedy-drama Steel Magnolias. Written by Robert Harling, the play morphed into a movie of the same name in 1989. It runs for three weekends, Feb. 10-25, 2012. (more...)

Broadway veteran Kristin Chenoweth stars as Carlene Cockburn in the new ABC drama series GCB, debuting Sunday, March 4th. Chenoweth received a Tony Award for her role as Sally Brown in the Broadway musical You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown, and is also celebrated for originating the role of Glinda in Wicked. In 2010, she appeared as Fran Kubelik in Promises, Promises alongside Sean Hayes. (more...)

North Carolina Theatre today announced that Tony Award-winning actress and Raleigh native, Beth Leavel, will star as ‘M’Lynn’ in their upcoming production of Steel Magnolias. The play will run Friday, April 20th through Sunday, April 29th, 2012 in A.J. Fletcher Theater at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh. (more...)
