Lynn Harrell to Perform With Hartt String Quartet, 3/18 by BWW News Desk - Mar 13, 2013
The Hartt School has announced two special events: A cello and chamber music master class with world-renowned cellist and pedagogue Lynn Harrell, and the debut of the Hartt String Quartet in a chamber music concert, with special guest Lynn Harrell. Music students from the Hartt School perform in the master class on Monday, March 18, at 7:30 PM, in Wilde Auditorium at the University of Hartford. The master class is open to the public for observation at no charge. The chamber music concert, with a program of Beethoven's Quartet Op. 18, No. 4 and Schubert's Cello Quintet, is Tuesday, March 19, at 7:30 PM, in Lincoln Theater at the University of Hartford. THERE IS NO ADMISSION CHARGE FOR THIS CONCERT. (Please disregard previous notices that included admission charges.) Fifth Annual Playwrights Retreat Begins in Stratford by BWW News Desk - Oct 01, 2012
The Stratford Shakespeare Festival's fifth annual Playwrights Retreat begins today and runs through October 20. This year eight writers from across the country will be in Stratford for the three-week retreat: Meg Braem (Calgary), Matthew Heiti (Sudbury), Daniel Karasik (Toronto), Kevin Loring (Vancouver), Bryden MacDonald (Halifax), Haley McGee (Toronto), Janet Munsil (Victoria) and Elyne Quan (Toronto).

Bang on a Can takes over Alice Tully Hall presented by Lincoln Center's Great Performers series in a triple-bill birthday bash tonight, April 28 at 7pm featuring the Bang on a Can All-Stars, Asphalt Orchestra, and MIT's Gamelan Galak Tika. Bang on a Can is celebrating 25 years during 2012, having grown from a one-day New York-based Marathon concert (on Mother's Day in 1987 in a SoHo art gallery) to a multi-faceted performing arts organization with a broad range of year-round international activities. The Bang on a Can All-Stars have recorded their first studio album in five years, for release on Bang on a Can's Cantaloupe Music in 2012. The album, Big Beautiful Dark and Scary, is also the first to include the All-Stars' current line-up: Ashley Bathgate, cello; Robert Black, bass; Vicky Chow, piano; David Cossin, percussion; Mark Stewart, electric guitar; and Evan Ziporyn, clarinets. In celebration of its 25th birthday, Bang on a Can is giving a very special gift to the public. The complete, double album is available to download for free during the first 25 days of January (through January 25) from www.bangonacan25.org. In exchange, listeners need only share a memory, thought, or story of Bang on a Can from the last 25 years, to be displayed online. The result will be a scrapbook of memories not just from those closest to the organization, but from the many people worldwide that Bang on a Can has touched over the years.
