BWW Reviews: THE IMMIGRANT at Seven Angels Offers Storytelling at Its Best

Subtitled 'An American Musical,' it is in the truest sense the story of striving for the American Dream. Haskell (Max Bisantz) arrives in the small town of Hamilton, in Central Texas shortly after the turn of the century, pushing a banana cart and unable to speak English. Wary at first of the stranger, who also turns out to be a Jew, Milton and Ima (Paul Blankenship and Sarah Knapp) take him in. Milton, the town's banker, partners with Haskell to help build his business, which eventually turns into a dry goods store. When Haskell finally saves enough to bring his wife, Leah (Rita Markova), over from Russia, the friendship is tested, however. Haskell no longer is the observant Jew she married. The new country has changed him. He doesn't wear his hat, keep a Kosher home or observe the Sabbath any more. (more...)

Amas Musical Theatre (Donna Trinkoff/Artistic Producer) will present three staged readings of "Casanova", a new musical with music by Martin Sylvestri, book and lyrics by Joel Higgins, directed by Gabriel Barre. The readings will take place on Wednesday, February 6th at 6:00pm, and Thursday, February 7th at 3:00pm and 7:00pm at The Players Theatre, 115 MacDougal Street. (more...)

The 2010 Barrymore nominees have been announced! Created in 1994, The Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre are the Greater Philadelphia region's only comprehensive theatre awards program, recognizing artists for excellence and innovation while serving to increase awareness of the richness of the local theatre community. The Barrymore Awards are a nationally recognized symbol of excellence for theatre in this region, raising the bar for the work produced by local theatres and individual artists, and generating significant coverage in all the local newspapers and in national trade publications.Each year, over 120 shows produced by the region's professional theatres are reviewed by the Barrymore Voters. At the annual awards presentation each Fall, the Barrymore Awards are presented to honor the community's collective achievement. Fiddler on the Roof is one of those shows that almost everyone has experienced as some point in their lives - be it the film or a production locally, in NYC or on the high school level. It is for this reason that I feel no need to summarize its plot. It is a great challenge to make such a classic show fresh. With the Walnut's current production, Bruce Lumpkin manages to do just that - balancing presenting the well-known, beloved material with thoughtful directorial choices. (more...)
