Drummer, composer, and bandleader E.J. Strickland is most noted for his work with The Ravi Coltrane Quartet, The Marcus Strickland Quartet & Trio, & The Russell Malone Quartet. He currently leads his own bands The E.J. Strickland Quintet & The E.J. Strickland Project. His playing has been described as emitting "fields of cumulative energy, clouds of feather-touch and heavy-handed syncopations, latent with power like an oncoming storm" (Thomas Conrad, Downbeat Magazine). Terence Blanchard Releases New Album 'Magnetic'

Magnetic, Terence Blanchard's stunning new album is set for release May 28 on Blue Note Records. The album features ten original songs written by Blanchard or a member of his quintet: saxophonist Brice Winston, pianist Fabian Almazon, bassist Joshua Crumbly, and drummer Kendrick Scott. Magnetic also showcases special guest appearances from bass legend Ron Carter, as well as label-mates saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and guitarist Lionel Loueke. (more...)

Kimmel Center Creative Music Program for Jazz Announces Monthly Meet the Master Series

The Kimmel Center's Creative Music Program for Jazz continues its popular Meet the Masters series engaging 25+ regional student musicians, ages 11-17, in master class workshops led by world renowned jazz musicians. On Saturday, November 10, the Meet the Masters workshop is led by one of the top tenor saxophonists and flautists, Gary Thomas, in the Merck Arts Education Center from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Legendary jazz trumpeter and composer Ralph Alessi leads the master workshop on Saturday, December 22. These sessions are open to the public for interested musicians, students and teachers and jazz aficionados who would like to observe. (more...)

Blue Note Reopens with Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke After Longest Closure in Club's History, Now thru 11/7

The Blue Note Jazz Club reopened last night, November 3rd after the longest closure in its illustrious 31-year history. Prior to hurricane Sandy, the club had only been closed four days in its existence (all due to external circumstances): two days for 9/11, one day in 2011 for Hurriance Irene, and one day for a blizzard during a Nancy Wilson show (year unconfirmed). The club reopens with a five day run with Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke's newest band featuring Ravi Coltrane (sax), Marcus Gilmore (drums) and Charles Altura (guitar). (more...)

As a result of his stylistic and harmonic innovations, Brecker is the most influential saxophonist of the last 30 years and is among the most studied contemporary instrumentalists in music schools throughout the world today. Roulette Presents SIM BIG BAND Tonight, 6/5

Roulette presents the School for Improvised Music (SIM) big band, tonight, June 5, 8pm. The SIM big band is comprised of many of SIM's esteemed faculty who will also compose music especially for this project. SIM (part of the Center for Improvised Music)i s a core group of professional musician/teachers committed to creating a school in New York City for emerging performers who want to pursue a serious study of improvised music. Since 2001, SIM has presented over 20 intensive workshop sessions for students from all over the globe. This big band project is one of several endeavors the Center for Improvised Music (CIM) is undertaking to celebrate the milestone of its 10 year anniversary. Another of these projects is an interview series in which SIM faculty will interview veteran jazz musicians in front of a live audience. CIM will also be hosting listening sessions in which musicians present music for the public as a way of educating the jazz audience at large. (more...)
