Greg Allen, Alice Austen and More to Stage Readings at Goodman Theatre, 7/20-21 & 8/16

Goodman Theatre presents four free staged readings of new plays developed in the Playwrights Unit, a season-long residency program for local writers who meet twice monthly with members of the theater's artistic staff to discuss their plays in progress. Out of this process emerges four brand new plays, which appear in FREE staged readings: Prowess by Ike Holter (July 20 at 2pm); Sleeping with the Prince of Darkness: The Imagined Pillow Talk of FBI Agent John O'Neill by Greg Allen (July 20 at 7:30pm); F(law)less by christopher oscar peña (July 21 at 2:30pm); and Ninth Man Outby Alice Austen (August 16 at 7:30pm). BENEDICTUS to Play Theater for the New City Beginning 5/30

Theater for the New City, Crystal Field, Executive Director, has announced that the world premiere of Tom Attea's new play, BENEDICTUS, written two years ago, about a pope who resigns, will open on May 30th and run until June 16, 2013, at Theater for the New City (155 First Avenue). Salgado Productions just presented the first staged reading of Carlos Mendoza's 'Valencia' musical at the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater as part of the 2013 Playwrights Unit Festival of Readings and Insight Series. Director/Choreographer Luis Salgado directed the reading as well as produce the show as it evolves. Broadway's In The Heights cast members Blanca Camacho, Doreen Montalvo and Ruben Flores are part of the cast that bring life to the very human characters of this compelling story of a loving elderly home, Valencia.

Working Theater Begins Site-Specific LA RUTA Inside 48' Truck Today

Working Theater, the 28-year-old Off-Broadway company, in collaboration with Magnum Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving the Magnum Photos legacy and supporting photography around social justice issues, have joined forces to present Ed Cardona, Jr.'s LA RUTA, a world premiere immigration-themed play that will be staged inside the trailer and cab of an actual 48' truck. An accompanying photographic installation about the immigrant experience will also be presented. (more...)

New Ground Theatre Festival Announces 2013 Lineup

From May 2-11, 2013, Cleveland Play House (CPH) will showcase a variety of new work from nationally recognized artists in its annual New Ground Theatre Festival. The centerpiece of this showcase of new work by America's most exciting playwrights is the world premiere production of Rich Girl, written by Victoria Stewart and directed by CPH Artistic Director Michael Bloom, featuring Tony Award-nominated actresses Dee Hoty and Liz Larsen. A festival highlight this year is an interdisciplinary presentation in partnership DANCE Cleveland of three performances of The Better Half by Chicago-based Lucky Plush Productions, with the help of funding from Arts Midwest Touring Fund with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, and National Dance Project of the New England Foundation for the Arts. Coming straight off of its extended run at the New York International Fringe Festival Encore Series, The New Colony's award-winning 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche will be added to the SoHo Playhouse, Inc. Rivendell Theatre Ensemble (RTE ), Chicago's only Equity theatre devoted to the work of women theatre artists, is proud to announce American Wee-Pie as the second production in its 2012-2013 Season of Reinvention. The production reunites the core artistic team from Rivendell's critically acclaimed 2009 world premiere of The Walls--RTE Resident Playwright Lisa Dillman and director RTE member Megan Carney. American Wee-Pie runs January 10 - February 16, 2013, at Rivendell's new performance venue, 5779 N. Ridge.
