Guthrie Director Joe Dowling today announced directors for the three productions slated to headline the theater's 2009 Tony Kushner celebration, in addition to three speaking events designed to expand and enhance the issues raised in the work of this Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright.

Tony Kushner's 'The Illusion,' loosely adapted from Pierre Corneille's 17th century classic farce 'L'illusion Comique,' is an entertaining comedic-drama that transports audiences from mayhem to magic and back again. It questions what it really means to love, and the obligations that may be connected with that emotion.

Matthew Jocelyn, the incoming Artistic and General Director of The Canadian Stage Company and acclaimed director of theatre and opera on the world stage, is slated to direct Lucia di Lammermoor at Oper Frankfurt, an internationally renowned showcase for opera, next month.

The Theatre and Interpretation Center at Northwestern University will continue its 2008-09 season in May with the two remaining Mainstage productions: an adaptation of a Pierre Corneille classic, and a Holocaust drama by Israeli playwright and director Joshua Sobol. Under the new leadership of Artistic Director Henry Godinez and Managing Director Barbara Butts, the Theatre and Interpretation Center (TIC) at Northwestern University will kick off its 28th season in October with the Tony Award-winning musical 'Sweeney Todd' by Hugh Wheeler and Stephen Sondheim.

The New York Times reports this morning that Playwright Tony Kushner has been named the first recipient of the Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award. The award, which which comes with a cash prize of $200,000 will be presented on Wednesday.

Guthrie Director Joe Dowling announced that Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner has been commissioned by the Guthrie to write a new play. Tentatively titled The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures, Kushner's Guthrie commission will premiere on the McGuire Proscenium Stage in the spring of 2009, as part of the Guthrie's 2008-2009 season.
