BWW Review: TAO OF GLASS at Perth Festival
by Cicely Binford - Feb 23, 2020

I'm not sure where to begin with Phelim McDermott and Philip Glass's rhapsodic, hypnotic ode to creativity and collaboration,Tao of Glass, as part of Perth Festival. As a theatre reviewer, my task is to look at a performance with objectivity while also remaining open to its emotional intentions, which means that, of necessity, a bit of subjectivity makes its way into my summary. Since watching Tao of Glass, I find my thoughts and impressions of it making a circle loop around my brain, as if they too were revolving on the platform that turns counter-clockwise in the centre of the show's set.

BWW Review: COSI FAN TUTTE at the Met Opera
by George Weinhouse - Feb 17, 2020

Two years ago, when I first saw photos of the projected new COSI FAN TUTTE,which was a production that originated at English National Opera and was slated to come to the Met, I was circumspect. I had grown up on three previous incarnations of COSI, the first dating from the 1950's a very traditional production which starred Richard Tucker and Eleanor Steber, the subsequent one dating from the 1980's, which had featured Kiri TeKanawa, and the last from 1996, which starred Carol Vaness and Suzanne Mentzer as the sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella. All were very much 'period' pieces which made no effort to update or change the locale from the original setting of eighteenth century Naples.

The production features six virtuosic jugglers: Kati Ylä-Hokkala, Tristan Curty, Dominik Harant, Kim Huynh, Liza van Brakel, and Wes Peden and four contemporary dancers: Sakeema Peng Crook, Tia Hockey, Erin O'Toole, and Yu-Hsien Wu, and an immersive score by London-based composer and producer Gabriel Prokofiev. The Guardian called Spring a?oejoyfully hypnotica??filled with intricate skill.a?? Visually arresting, colorfula?"with lighting design by Guy Hoare and costume design by Claire Ashleya?"and bursting with rhythm and pattern, Spring is a refreshing and entertaining production at the vanguard of contemporary circus.
