BWW Review: ST. NICHOLAS at Goodman Theatre
by Rachel Weinberg - Jan 14, 2019

Acclaimed actor Brendan Coyle takes the Goodman stage in Conor McPherson's thoroughly bizarre monologue play ST. NICHOLAS, which combines the innately unsettling and the supernatural. Coyle, known for his work as Mr. Bates in DOWNTON ABBEY (which this critic has admittedly never seen) proves a master at his craft in this production transferred from London's Donmar Warehouse.

Brendan Coyle To Star In A Revival Of Conor McPherson's ST. NICHOLAS At Goodman Theatre
by A.A. Cristi - Oct 18, 2018

Goodman Theatre adds to its 2018/2019 Season a limited engagement of St. Nicholas-an internationally-acclaimed major revival by London's Donmar Warehouse of Conor McPherson's 1997 intimate thriller, directed by Simon Evans. The monologue play stars Olivier Award-winning actor Brendan Coyle ("Mr. Bates" of the smash sensation Downton Abbey, for which he earned an Emmy Award nomination) in "a superlative, mesmerizing performance that's simply not to be missed" (The Arts Review). The U.S. premiere, which appears in the Goodman's 350-seat flexible Owen Theatre, follows two acclaimed recent appearances at the Donmar Warehouse and the Dublin Theatre Festival. The creative team includes Peter McKintosh (Set), Matt Daw (Lighting) and Christopher Shutt (Sound). Goodman Theatre's limited engagement of St. Nicholas appears January 9 - 27, 2019 in the Owen Theatre (170 N. Dearborn). Tickets are available now ONLY with the purchase of a new Classic Membership (4-play packages start at $80). Individual tickets ($25 - $60; subject to change) go on sale Friday, November 9. For tickets and more information, visit GoodmanTheatre.org/StNicholas or call the box office (312.443.3800, 12 noon - 5pm daily).

BWW Review: MEASURE FOR MEASURE, Donmar Warehouse
by Marianka Swain - Oct 12, 2018

It's a #MeToo-era Measure for Measure over at the Donmar, with Josie Rourke conducting a fascinating experiment: abridging Shakespeare's problem play to just over an hour and running it twice, once in period, once in modern dress. And with the key roles of Isabella and Angelo swapped between Hayley Atwell and Jack Lowden.

BWW Review: THE YORK REALIST, Crucible, Sheffield
by Ruth Deller - Mar 30, 2018

Robert Hastie's take on Peter Gill's tale of north/south love is sympathetic and emotional, with a beautiful lead performance from Ben Batt.

BWW Review: CURTAINS, Rose Theatre
by Aliya Al-Hassan - Mar 1, 2018

It is Ida's 86th birthday, but it's a milestone she would rather have not reached. Her family wants to gather and celebrate, but she would rather be removed from her small world of pain and confusion. She sits in the midst of the manufactured joviality of family members who feel both guilt of their own past absences and annoyance at the need to be at her party at all.

BWW Review: THE YORK REALIST, Donmar Warehouse
by Rona Kelly - Feb 18, 2018

In the Donmar Warehouse's last season, Knives in Hens split opinion in a highly stylised and surreal production. As the title may suggest, Peter Gill's 2001 play The York Realist could not be further from this. Grounded in naturalism both in script and vision, Robert Hastie's production of The York Realist finds an ideal leading man in the remarkable Ben Batt.

BWW Review: THE JUNGLE BOOK, Richmond Theatre
by Aliya Al-Hassan - Feb 8, 2018

For many people, their first introduction to The Jungle Book is the Disney film of the same name. This new adaptation from Olivier award winner Jessica Swale deserves the effort of disassociation, as it rewards in numerous ways. Swale has adapted Rudyard Kipling's beloved story of the boy Mowgli being raised by wolves in the jungle into a modern, relevant and hugely entertaining show.
