When, in 1933, the legendary African American actor/singer, Paul Robeson, played Othello in London, it was seen by audiences and critics alike as being a landmark in theatre history - and very shocking! Especially when he kissed British actress Peggy Ashcroft! The role of Shakespeare's 'Moor' had always been played by white actors in black makeup.

His recovery is going extremely well and he was even discharged from the hospital earlier this week. The Staples of Shakespeare: Gender-Bending from TWELFTH NIGHT to 'VERONA'
by BWW Special Coverage - Nov 10, 2013

TWELFTH NIGHT and RICHARD III, starring the Tony-winning, incomparable Mark Rylance, have adopted a creative leniency with the characters' gender - though Shakespeare's staple to command his characters to don the garb of a member of the opposite sex, for reasons interwoven in love and lust, greed and vengeance, is a common thread running throughout his romantic repertoire.

BWW Reviews: American Ballet Theatre's Triple Bill
by Barnett Serchuk - May 28, 2013

I was looking forward to American Ballet Theater's triple bill on May 21 with anticipation, because I had seen one of the ballets, Frederick Ashton's A Month in the County, years ago, and always held it in warm esteem. I remembered how moved I was as the curtain fell on the dancer (was it Lynn Seymour?) portraying the heroine, Natalia Petrovna, alone on the stage with nothing but a loveless and frustrating future awaiting her.
