Angela Lansbury, James Earl Jones, Bernadette Peters et al. to Present 2012 Drama Desk Awards!

The Drama Desk Awards have announced the lineup of presenters for this years awards ceremony, hosted by Brooke Shields and Drama Desk winner Brian d'Arcy James. The presenters represent many different aspects of the New York theater community including Broadway royalty: Angela Lansbury, James Earl Jones, Bernadette Peters; award winning dramatists: Doug Wright and Rick Elice; legendary composers: Maury Yeston, William Finn; heralded directors: Roger Rees, Alex Timbers; celebrated designers: Peggy Eisenhauer; revered orchestrators: Jonathan Tunick; valued members of the New York theater scene: Oskar Eustis, Jenny Gersten; and, of course, popular performers: Martha Plimpton, John Larroquette, Julie Halston. The 57th Annual Drama Desk Awards will take place on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at 8PM at The Town Hall. ( more...)

Renovated Public Theater to Include New Lounge

This fall The Public Theater will unveil its revitalized downtown home as the Company celebrates a milestone year that also includes the 50th anniversary of the Delacorte Theater, home to Shakespeare in the Park. The revitalization will transform the lobby into a piazza where audiences, artists, and the public will engage with one another. A central element of the project is the addition of The Library at The Public Theater, a new lounge serving food and drinks on the lobbys expanded mezzanine level. The Library at The Public Theater is named in honor of the landmark buildings original use as the Astor Library, New York Citys first public library. ( more...)

This particular evening also featured a conversation with Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director of the Public Theater in NYC and readings by David Henry Hwang and additional readers Francis Jue and BD Wong. The Public Theater is presenting the world premiere of February House, with music and lyrics by Gabriel Kahane and book by Seth Bockley, beginning today, May 8th in The Publics Martinson Theater, and running through June 10th. Three stars of the show composer and lyricist Gabriel Kahane, actress Kacie Sheik, and actor Julian Fleisher have all been tapped by Joes Pub at The Public Theater for solo performances this June. F. Scott Fitzgeralds The Great Gatsby, a final week through Sunday, May 13. Created and performed by Elevator Repair Service, this award-winning theatrical event, directed by John Collins, was originally scheduled to close on Sunday, May 6.
