Josiah Theatre Works to Present ANNIVERSARY at New Federal Theatre, 5/22 by BWW News Desk - May 17, 2013
Josiah Theatre Works has announced on behalf of director and writer Nickolas Long, III*, a live showcase for Woody King Jr.'s New Federal Theatre Play Competition, featuring the World Premiere play ANNIVERSARY by Estelle Francois. The play will be directed by Long on May 22nd, 2013 at 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall at the New Federal Theatre, 292 Henry Street, NYC. (more...)

Woodie King, Jr. and New Federal Theatre to be Honored with 2013 Edwin Booth Award, 5/6 by BWW News Desk - Apr 29, 2013
This year's Edwin Booth Award will be presented to the legendary theatre director and producer Woodie King, Jr., founding director of the pioneering African-American theatrical production and training institution New Federal Theatre. The New Federal Theater integrates minorities and women into the mainstream of the profession through artistic training and play production. Mr. King will be present to receive the award. The event takes place May 6th at the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center (MESTC) of The Graduate Center of City University of NY. (more...)

What happens when the squares of Seville meet the streets of New York? Find out tonight, April 26 when Carmen's Place (A Fantasy) opens at the Castillo Theatre on 42nd Street, running until June 16. Featuring some of opera's best-loved music as well as six original musical numbers, Carmen's Place (A Fantasy) is helmed by the 2012 AUDELCO Award winner for directing, Gabrielle L. Alliance Theatre Receives Grant from Andrew W. Mellon Foundation by BWW News Desk - Jan 08, 2013
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded a grant to the Alliance Theatre to create a three-year Playwright In Residence staff position. Designed to advance the role of playwrights in American theatre, the goals of the residencies include providing playwrights with space, time and resources; and positively influencing the working environment of theatres by embedding playwrights on their staffs. The Show Goes On Productions in collaboration with R.Evolución Latina presents a talk-back series on the topic of 'Revolution' to be held following the 8pm performances of Ghost Dancer on Thursdays, December 1st and December 8th. Panelists for the December 1st 'What Is Revolution?' talk-back will include: Luis Salgado, Founder/Director of R.Evolución Latina and 'Ghost Dancer' Cast Member; Reza Salazar,'Ghost Dancer' Cast Member; Maria Torres, Choreographer and performer in the Broadway show 'Swing'; Gabriela Garcia, former 'Chicago' Dance Captain; and Carlos Serrano, Playwright and Member of the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre. The December 8th panelists will include the cast of Ghost Dancer moderated by The Show Goes On Productions' founder Emileena Pedigo. (more...)

Castillo Theatre's SALLY AND TOM Wins 5 AUDELCO Awards by BWW News Desk - Nov 30, 2012
On Monday, November 19, the membership of the Audience Development Corporation honored the Castillo Theatre with wins in all five of the categories in which it was nominated for the Vivian Robinson AUDELCO Recognition Awards for Excellence in Black Theatre (aka the Viv Awards) for its production of Sally and Tom (The American Way) by Fred Newman and Annie Roboff, directed by Gabrielle L. Kurlander. The musical looks at the relationship between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, his slave and mistress for 30 years, exploring the tragic contradiction at the heart of American history and culture. National Theatre Conference Honors Elizabeth McCann, Dominique Morisseau, and New Federal Theatre with 2012 Awards by BWW News Desk - Oct 11, 2012
The National Theatre Conference (NTC), an organization founded in 1925 that meets annually in New York to discuss relevant issues in today's theatre community and to celebrate outstanding achievement in the American theatre, has named the recipients of its 2012 awards. Broadway producer Elizabeth McCann has been named Person of the Year; the New Federal Theatre, under the direction of its founder, Woodie King, Jr., is the recipient of the Theatre of the Year Award; and playwright Dominique Morisseau has been selected as the winner of the Barrie and Bernice Stavis Playwright Award. All three will be presented with their awards and honored at the Players and at Signature Theatre during NTC's annual conference in New York October 26-28, 2012. (more...)
