Winter Rhythms @ Urban Stages has announced two very special upcoming events as part of its “2023 Winter Rhythms” series, the award-winning music festival at Urban Stages Theater.

The Musical,” at Zankel Hall in Carnegie Hall. Check out photos here!
Speaking of 'birds of a feather,' this musical is not so much about birds, as it is about drag queens. Think Robin Williams and Nathan Lane in 'The Birdcage,' add a fabulous Broadway score by Jerry Herman (of 'Hello, Dolly!' fame), a hilarious book by Harvey Fierstein ('Kinky Boots') and a few thousand feathers and sequins, and you have 'La Cage aux Folles,' the Tony-winning musical that too rarely gets a chance on stage these days!

Having had the privilege to serve as Broadway World's Maine Editor for more than three years now, I can say with pride that the state, though remote as it may seem from the epicenter of the theatre world, Broadway, is blessed to be home to so many thriving theatre companies who produce exciting, vibrant seasons. As I compiled my list for 2016 with many familiar names, I was also struck by the extraordinary consistency of excellence these companies maintain. Here are my personal choices of the best in Maine, grouped by theatre and show.
History- actual 20th century events and the theatre's own story and legacy - became the joint focus of Maine State Music Theatre's second Peek Behind the Curtain talkback, held on July 7 at the Curtis Memorial Library. The panel examined the characters and forces that formed the basis for MSMT"s thrilling production of Evita, now playing at the Pickard until July 16, and also took several excursions into MSMT's history, which forms the basis of a new retrospective exhibition, MSMT Past, Present, and Future, which serendipitously celebrated a gala opening that same date.
Moderated by Broadway World's Carla Maria Verdino-Sullwold, the panel featured the three stars of the Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical, Kate Fahrner, Matt Farcher, and Nat Chandler, as well as the Artistic Directors of two of the areas leading theatres, MSMT's own Curt Dale Clark and the Good Theater's Brian P. Allen.
Twenty-five years after it was last presented at the Pickard Theater, Andrew Lloyd-Webber/Tim Rice's masterpiece has returned in triumph to Maine State Music Theatre in a stunning new production directed and choreographed by Marc Robin. Boasting the largest cast in the company's history (46), this Evita is gripping and epic, at the same time that it is touchingly intimate and magnificently detailed. The size of the endeavor is both literal and figurative, for MSMT's Evita succeeds not only in its grand sweep, but also in the magnitude of its intangible assets - unsparing honesty, intensity, and emotional depth.
The York Symphony Orchestra announces its 2016-17 season, A Musical Journey Through Time, a series of eleven performances, which will include: a Classical series featuring six performances, inspired by some of the best known compositions of all time; three Pops performances, featuring the music of John Williams, the Titanic, and holiday selections audiences will know and love; along with two family-focused presentations, including the popular educational concert featuring Classical Kids from Chicago and a performance featuring National Public Radio's, From The Top, Christopher O'Riley. Music Director and Conductor, Lawrence Golan, returns to the stage after a successful 2015-16 season to lead the orchestra on this time-inspired journey.
On the evening of March 21, veteran vocalist and stage actress Anna Bergman presented a program called Falling In Love With Love, featuring the romantic songs of Richard Rodgers to support the Actors' Temple (339 West 47th Street) at its 3rd Annual Fundraising Gala, one year shy of Congregation Ezrath Israel's centennial (that's the official name of the synagogue). Prior to Bergman's show (produced by recently elected Temple Board President Carol Ostrow), Rabbi Jill Hausman and outgoing Temple Board President Robert Reicher, both of whom received awards, gave warm and funny speeches, making eminently clear why the Actors' Temple is known as “the Cool Shul.”
CAROL OSTROW AND THE ACTORS' TEMPLE BOARD OF DIRECTORS is pleased to announce their annual benefit FALLING IN LOVE WITH LOVE music directed by JOSEPH THALKEN. FALLING IN LOVE WITH LOVE, starring Anna Bergman and featuring Nat Chandler will be Monday, March 21, 2016 at 7:30 pm at The Actors' Temple (339 West 47th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenue). Tickets vary in prices and are available at www.theactorstemple.org/events.
