WHITE NOISE Begins 6/29 at Theater for the New City

'White Noise' is the first play by Washington, DC artist Tom Block (www.tomblock.com). It depicts a philosophical artist who travels to Detroit for an exhibit, where he is hosted by an aging, bickering couple who are wealthy, stingy and tormented. The play painstakingly explores Block's own thought process. Its set is a 25 foot long mural by Block which is based on a 13th century Sufi tract, 'The Conference of the Birds' by Attar, which also represents the psyche of the main character. The play raises questions of mysticism and the application of spirituality in our lives. Theater for the New City, 155 First Ave., NYC, will present the work's New York debut June 27 to July 14. Moema Umann directs. Block is a well-known painter, human right activist and author of two books, 'Shalom/Salaam: A Story of a Mystical Fraternity' and 'A Fatal Addiction: War in the Name of God.' BWW Reviews: Juilliard Dances Repertory

The Juilliard School presented an interesting program on the afternoon of April 7, 2013, at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre. Before I even start my review , I want to extend my congratulations to Lawrence Rhodes, the Juilliard Artistic Director, for his commitment and dedication in producing, what is in my mind, some of the best graduate dancers I have ever seen-and I've seen many of them over the years. These dancers are what we need in our artistic venues, whether as performers, or, as I hope, future administrators, teachers and choreographers. Time will tell. My only problem: will there be enough places for the dancers when they graduate? I hope so. When you scrutinize highly gifted college artists, you want them to exit, blazing and seething with their talent, ready to change the artistic world around them. By their ardor and enthusiasm, they only help to reinforce our country's need for greater commitment to the arts, which is sorely lacking and much needed. Mr. Rhodes, keep up the splendid work. I'm always watching your dancers. (more...)

Henning Rübsam's SENSEDANCE Rescheduled For this Coming Sunday

Due to Hurricane Sandy, the last day of performances for Henning Rübsam's SENSEDANCE were canceled. The new re-scheduled performances are this coming Sunday, January 20th, at 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm at Salvatore Capezio Theater at Peridance, 126 East 13th Street, NYC.. The company will present two premieres celebrating Henning's 21st year as founding artistic director of his ensemble. The premieres will include, 'obsession | calm' and 'Brahms Dances'. Also on the program will be a reprise of 'Petit Pas' as a tribute to the late Neil Armstrong, whose voice is featured in the work; and 'HALF-LIFE 102'. The Dancers for the season are: Cynthia Dragoni, Erin Ginn, Temple Kemezis, Maria Phegan, Jacqueline Stewart, Uthman Ebrahim, Oisín Monaghan, Juan Rodriguez, Matt Van, and Henning Rübsam. (more...)
