Yesterday, May 23, the company of Godspell celebrated their Academy Award-winning writer Stephen Schwartz in a one-night-only concert featuring songs from Schwartz's Pippin, Wicked, The Bakers Wife, The Magic Show, Working, My Son Pinocchio, Children of Eden, Rags, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Prince of Egypt, Enchanted and more. Confirmed! GODSPELL to Perform at 2012 Tony Awards

BroadwayWorld has confirmed that the revival of GODSPELL on Broadway, despite a lack of Tony nominations, will make an appearance on the 2012 broadcast to perform a selection from the musical. At this time, there is no official word or confirmation on who, or what the cast will be performing.

Transport Group, the Drama Desk and OBIE award-winning theatre company, has announced initial casting for its one-night-only, all-star concert of the acclaimed 1983 Broadway musical Baby, which will take place Monday, June 18 at 7pm at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, 121 Christopher Street. Frank Wildhorn Brings FRANK & FRIENDS Series to Birdland; Kicks Off in June With Morgan James, Rob Evan and More

Broadway at Birdland today announced a partnership with multi-Grammy and Tony nominated composer Frank Wildhorn for a monthly concert series called Frank & Friends. The series of one-night-only concerts will feature the songs and performers from the composers range of work in popular, theatrical and classical music. All profits will go to The Actors Fund, a nationwide human services organization that helps all professionals in the performing arts and entertainment. ( more...)

Professor Mwalim DaPhunkee Recognized by Boston City Council

Musician/ Playwright/ Spoken-word artist and UMass Dartmouth Professor, Mwalim ( Morgan James Peters) 'DaPhunkeeProfessor' was surprised and honored with a proclamation from the Boston City Council. During Mwalim's May 3rd presentation of "You're An NDN??" at the Dudley Branch Library, Ken Yarbough, special assistant to Charles Yancey made the presentation in front of an audience of about 30 - 40 people. Cited for his "27 years as a performing artist, writer, digital media artist, educator and mentor throughout the Boston area..." Mwalim was particularly recognized for his "Academic On The Block" initiative that brings presentations in the arts and humanities to community spaces, libraries and schools throughout eastern Massachusetts, including Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan. Hundreds of hopeful actors, ages 6 to 16, showed up at the Circle in the Square Theatre today, April 25, to audition for the Broadway musical GODSPELL. The audition panel, including director Daniel Goldstein, is looking to fill 10 roles in the show. About 300 kids, including Holly Block, Gaten Matarazzo and Ellis Gage, who are featured in the video below, performed 16 measures of music for the panel. ( more...)

2012 Lotte Lenya Competition Winners Announced

Matthew Grills, tenor, of Rochester, N.Y, won the $15,000 First Prize in the finals of the 2012 Lotte Lenya Competition, held on April 21, 2012, at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. In a close contest, Justin Hopkins, bass-baritone of Philadelphia, and Jacob Keith Watson, tenor of Wynne, Ark., tied for Second Prizes of $10,000, and Megan Marino, mezzo-soprano of Malvern, Penn., was awarded the Third Prize of $7,500.
