50 Sing for Hope Pianos Will Be Permanently Placed in New York City Schools

Sing for Hope today announced the 50 New York City public schools across the five boroughs chosen to receive Sing for Hope Pianos this fall. The placement of Sing for Hope Pianos in schools is in partnership with the New York City Department of Education and benefits an estimated 15,000 school children. The delivery, maintenance, and associated programming for each piano is estimated to cost $100,000 and the program has not yet been fully funded.

Sing for Hope will celebrate the fifth anniversary of its legendary community arts program, The Sing for Hope Pianos, with a public unveiling of all 50 pianos on June 6(th) at 28 Liberty Plaza in New York City. The event will feature Tony Award-winning actress Lea Salonga, Tony Award- and Drama Desk-nominee Daphne Rubin-Vega, former Late Night with David Letterman bandleader Paul Shaffer, the dynamic Anderson & Roe Piano Duo, cast members from On Site Opera's acclaimed Figaro Trilogy, saxophonist/composer Ted Nash, singer/songwriter Pete Muller, and other stars of the New York music scene, along with student musicians from Sing for Hope's programs.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced the first class of its new Citizen Artist Fellows program, which recognizes artists across the country who utilize their art form for positive impact on communities small and large. These Citizen Artist Fellows will be a signature component of the annual Kennedy Center Arts Summit, to be held on Monday, April 25, 2016 in the Kennedy Center Theater Lab.

Opera Santa Barbara's 22nd season will conclude in grand style with a pair of Giacomo Puccini's great one-act operas, the heart-warming Suor Angelica and the comic farce Gianni Schicchi, at the historic Granada Theatre on April 22 and 24. Performances will take place at 7:30 pm on Friday, April 22, and at 2:30 pm on Sunday, April 24. What does it mean that a jazz pianist from Kenner, La., just outside of New Orleans, is running one of the most visible musical platforms in the country?' Supporters of Sing for Hope (www.singforhope.org) will soon have a chance to find out. On Monday, October 26, at TriBeCa Rooftop, the New York City-based 'arts peace corps' organization will produce its ninth annual Sing for Hope Gala in support of its arts outreach programs for communities in need. Co-Chaired by Sing for Hope champions Renee Fleming, Ann Ziff, Margie Loeb, and Muhammad Yunus, with Vice-Chairs The Arnhold Family, the gala will feature Mr. Batiste in an intimate performance, along with some exciting surprise musical guests.

Pity the poor also-rans in operatic history: Leoncavallo's LA BOHEME and even Rossini's OTELLO are perhaps the most famous titles. Oh, yes: We mustn't forget Giovanni Paisiello's IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA—not after hearing On Site Opera's production in New York last week, we can't. Downstairs, upstairs, in m'lady's library, On Site introduced much of its audience last week to an “alternative universe” version of the Almavivas and the wily barber, Figaro, in a BARBIERE composed decades before the familiar version by Rossini.

Sing for Hope is thrilled to announce that the Sing for Hope Pianos will return to New York City for the fourth time in Summer 2015. In partnership with the City of New York and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, this year's program features fifty artist-designed pianos placed throughout the five boroughs from June 5-June 21 for all to enjoy.
