The Pasasdena Playhouse's Gala Set for 6/1

The Pasadena Playhouse (Sheldon Epps, Artistic Director and Elizabeth Doran Executive Director) announced today that the "best party in Pasadena" annual fundraiser entitled PREMIERE GALA "DESTINATION": AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER would be held at a private club in Pasadena on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. This year's event will honor Playhouse Alumni/supporter and Broadway producer Kathleen K. Johnson. The Playhouse Board of Directors will be spearheading this red carpet gala event inspired by the Hollywood glamour of the 1940s and 1950s. (more...)

The Pasadena Playhouse Announces Upcoming Season

The Pasadena Playhouse (Sheldon Epps, Artistic Director and Elizabeth Doran Executive Director) announced their 2013-2014 season today. The season will include a revival of the longest-running Broadway musical revue, Smokey Joe's Cafe featuring the musical masterpieces of the legendary team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller; Stoneface: The Rise and Fall and Rise of Buster Keaton, by Vanessa Claire Stewart and starring French Stewart ("3rd Rock From the Sun") which enjoyed a successful run at Sacred Fools Theatre Company this past summer; Above the Fold a new drama by Bernard Weinraub, about the world of journalism in the digital age, which received a HOTHOUSE at The Playhouse staged reading in 2012; Noel Coward's rarely produced A Song at Twilight, directed by Art Manke, who recently directed The Playhouse's hit revival of Coward's Fallen Angels; and a theatrical surprise production that will be selected and directed by Playhouse Artistic Director Sheldon Epps, to be announced at a later date. Panto at The Playhouse returns with Lythgoe Family Productions' special musical twist on the classic Aladdin tale, which will be offered as a holiday season add-on. Today in 1995, Smokey Joe's Cafe opened at the Virginia Theatre (now the August Wilson Theatre) where it ran for 2036 performances. Smokey Joe's Cafe is a musical revue showcasing 39 pop standards, including rock and roll, rhythm and blues songs written by songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The Original Broadway cast recording, Smokey Joe's Cafe: The Songs Of Leiber And Stoller won a Grammy award in 1996. In revue format with no unifying theme the 39 songs are presented by various members of the cast in various combinations, with no dialogue. There are novelty songs ('Charlie Brown'), romantic ballads ('Spanish Harlem') and infectious melodies ('There Goes My Baby'). (more...)

SJCChicago LLC is proud to present the return of Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre production of Smokey Joe's Café – The Songs of Leiber and Stoller at the Royal George Cabaret Theatre, 1641 N. Halsted Ave. The hit production received rave reviews from Chicago critics when it ran at Chicago's No Exit Café last fall. The transfer of Smokey Joe's Café – The Songs of Leiber and Stoller features the same award-winning cast directed, once again, by Brenda Didier. This production's musical direction is by Jeremy Ramey and Steve Hiltebrand serves as the associate director and associate producer. Smokey Joe's Café runs Thursday, March 7 – Sunday, May 26.
