The Los Altos Stage Company's closes its 19th anniversary season with the hilarious musical comedy with the eyebrow-raising title that took Broadway by storm when it opened in 2001. Urinetown: The Musical opens May 28 and runs through June 27 at the Bus Barn Theater in Los Altos.

Two of my very favorite things are satire and black comedy. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that URINETOWN: THE MUSICAL has been a favorite of mine since the show took home Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical back in 2002. It is a rarity in today's musical theatre - a truly original musical which is not based on existing source material. The show got its start in 1995 when Greg Kotis (book and lyrics) was a struggling student on a budget traveling in Europe and encountered pay-per-use toilets. It was then that the musical's central idea hit him: a future where toilets were controlled by a corporation with no concern for the poor. According to Kotis, the show 'was created in a spirit of defiance against what's typically offered up as stage worthy in America today.'

Civic Theatre will present the finale to its 2013-2014 main stage season with the irreverent, laugh-out-loud Tony-winning musical, "Urinetown" opening on Friday, May 2 with performances through Sunday, May 18. Civic's Artistic Director William Sanders directs and choreographs this musical that won 2002 Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Score and has been hailed as one of the most original musicals of the last 20 years. All performances will be held at Civic's historic Nineteenth Street Theatre at 527 N. 19th Street in Allentown. Special discounted tickets are available for performances on opening weekend. While Urinetown may have an unconventional subject matter (you'd be hard pressed to think of another musical that focuses so heavily on bodily functions), it doesn't kill the show at all. This may not be your grandma's musical, but (please forgive the litany of bad puns you're about to read) it's a piss-your-pants funny show. Joke after joke whiz by as the show flushes musical theater conventions down the drain.
