Opera San José General Director & CEO Shawna Lucey has revealed the 2026–27 Artists-in-Residence, a group of distinguished opera professionals who will perform in the company’s four mainstage productions at the California Theatre.

La bohème. Glyndebourne. Three trumpeters blare out a fanfare as the chorus pours onto stage, ready to deliver the myriad vocal interjections which mark out the beginning of Act 2. But Glyndebourne is No Ordinary Opera, and this is no ordinary scene. On a single musical cue, thirty-six choristers, dressed as Parisian waiters and cafegoers, unload and set onto stage eight tables and thirty-three cast-iron chairs, while delivering musical cues with pinpoint precision, in just 38 seconds. It is a feat of preparation, dedication, talent, commitment and painstaking rehearsal, and is an example of what makes the Glyndebourne Chorus one of the most special in the opera world.

Composer Mark-Anthony Turnage and his partner Rachael Hewer eschewed making banana bread during the Covid lockdown and decided to write an opera. After the pandemic, they went on to work on other projects, but unexpectedly Glyndebourne agreed to stage their new work, which made its world premiere last week.
A24’s films On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, Opus, and Death of a Unicorn will debut on HBO and be available to stream exclusively on Max in the U.S. this July.
