Devised and hosted by flamboyant part-time pop-star, musical alchemist and veteran of the Duckie Collective Boogaloo Stu, Pop Magic! combines cabaret, pop music and audience participation with cutting-edge recording technologies and social network platforms. Audience members collectively write, record and produce their own pop single and video, featuring an assembled cast of participants performing a flashmob dance routine. Along the way, Stu reveals the modest but glittering highs and barrel-scraping lows of his own pop career. Brian McKnight and The Duke Ellington Orchestra Perform at the Blue Note, May 16-18

R&B vocalist Brian McKnight has spent the better part of the last two decades on top of the charts, churning out one romantic hit after another for the Mercury, Motown, Warner Bros. and E1 Music labels. The multi-instrumentalist and 16-time Grammy nominee will explore some relatively new musical territory as a frontman for The Duke Ellington Orchestra from May 16 - 18 at the Blue Note. Rachel York will join Megan Hilty in the Encores! production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, opening May 9 at New York City Center. York will play the brunette, Dorothy Shaw, best friend of Lorelei, the diamond-loving blonde played by Hilty. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes will be directed by John Rando with music direction by Rob Berman and choreography by Randy Skinner and will play for seven performances, May 9 – 13, at New York City Center, 55th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues. Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, the renowned Long Island summer arts camp whose alumni include Natalie Portman and Mariah Carey, announces that its currently running “First Class,” the inaugural show of works by students of Usdan’s 2011 Portfolio Preparation Track being presented at the Atrium at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, has been extended through March 27. Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, the renowned New York-area summer arts day camp whose alumni include Natalie Portman and Mariah Carey, announces two free public art exhibits, in NYC and then the exhibit moves to Long Island: First Class, the inaugural exhibit of works by students of UsdanÂ’s 2011 Portfolio Preparation Track, from January to March 2012. Both exhibits are free and open to the public (detailed location information below). Previous exhibits by students in the program (formerly titled the Usdan Honors Art Intensive) have been presented at major public venues in New York City and on Long Island. ( more...)
