The Cultural Services of the French Embassy and Albertine Books,the dynamic bookshop and cultural center operated by the French Embassy in New York, today announce prominent American and Russian journalist, professor, and author Masha Gessen as the curator of the fifth annual Festival Albertine, which is themed 'Reimagining Democracy' and takes place October 30 - November 3, 2018. Informed by experience as a witness to affronts to democracy today, Gessen has often urged people to open their eyes to such challenges, and to use their imagination to picture what is further at stake. Many thinkers from France, America, and across the Francophone world are similarly united by a pressing concern over surging demagoguery and democracy's fragility.

Martin Heidegger and Hannah Arendt were leading intellectuals of the twentieth century. In the 1920's, they had a passionate affair. In the 1930's, Heidegger became an ardent Nazi while Arendt became an ardent Zionist. Nevertheless, after the war, they still continued to correspond and to meet. Douglas Lackey dramatizes their relationship in 'Arendt-Heidegger: A Love Story,' a five-character play to be presented by Theater for the New City from September 27 to October 14. Its dialogue and action go beyond known facts, but everything in the play is consistent with them. Alexander Harrington directs.

The fourth installation of ZEE JLF at Boulder, produced by Teamwork Arts, will bring more than 70 authors from around the world to explore today's hot topics while engaging the community in essential dialogue. Fort Worth Opera proudly announced today the news that distinguished author, cultural critic, and academic Margo Jefferson will deliver a keynote lecture on The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess at Bass Performance Hall, Saturday, April 27, as part of the opening weekend of the 2019 Fort Worth Opera Festival. Winner of the 1995 Pulitzer Prize in Criticism for her work at The New York Times, Jefferson's essays and reviews have appeared in numerous publications such as The Guardian, Harper's, The Scholar, and New York Magazine.

On Saturday, February 17, 2018, artists, activists, academics, and community leaders will gather at the Park Avenue Armory for Looking Back | Looking Forward, a symposium of conversations, performances, salons and open studios exploring artistic, social, and political perspectives on the fiftieth anniversary of the extraordinary world-changing events of 1968. Looking Back | Looking Forward marks the second annual Culture in a Changing America gathering at the Armory, and launches the 2018 season of the Interrogations of Form series. The event is presented in collaboration with The Aspen Institute Arts Program and ArtChangeUS.
