BWW Review: THE GREAT LEAP Just Misses at Guthrie Theater
by Karen Bovard - Jan 23, 2019

Lauren Yee is a talented playwright, with an ear for fast dialogue and a knack for creating pithy lines that work on several levels. This skill is clear in the title of her cross-cultural play now on the big proscenium stage at the Guthrie, and also pops up periodically through the two-act show. While the piece traverses some promising thematic terrain, it is too choppy and a little too predictable to work fully.

BWW Review: Delicious Fun in THE CAKE at Contemporary American Theater Festival
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Jul 12, 2018

It is plain that Della's resolution of the issue whether to bake a cake for Jen's same-sex wedding will call for a gingerly reassessment of her faith and her life. Realistically, it will not be solved wholesale by Della's discarding of her allegiance to what Macy dismisses as 'a book that's thousands of years old.' If Della is to find a way, it will require more subtlety and compromise.

Great Recall During the Great Terror: MEMOIRS OF A FORGOTTEN MAN at Contemporary American Theater Festival
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Jul 9, 2018

If you come to this show, do not expect to participate in a truly topical think piece about memory in a time of tyranny. You will witness instead a pair of entwined tales about rare mental abnormality and a somewhat overexposed aspect of totalitarianism. It is the telling of the tales, the acting and the scenery and, the evocations of synesthesia, by which Memoirs will work for you, or not.

BWW Review: Studio's CHIMERICA is Big as a Continent
by Roger Catlin - Sep 15, 2015

Twenty-six years ago, the day after thousands of soldiers in China's so called People's Liberation Army cleared Tiananmen Square, killing what could have been thousands of students who had been protesting there, a lone man with plastic grocery bags stood in front of a line of advancing tanks there.

BWW Reviews: Linguistic Marriage Counseling and Character Acting in a Comic Soufflé: THE FULL CATASTROPHE at Contemporary American Theater Festival
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Jul 20, 2015

For a weightless and elegant good time, it would be hard to beat The Full Catastrophe, by Michael Weller, at the Contemporary American Theater Festival. There is not one thing in the story to tether it to reality, or trouble us with any true sense of its characters being in any kind of jeopardy, and the presentation of the whole farrago, under Ed Herendeen's direction, is smooth and amiable. This play is best consumed at the end of one's visit to this year's Festival, after sampling the weightier and more nutritional fare.

BWW Reviews: CATF: ON CLOVER ROAD is an On-The-Edge-of-Your-Seat Experience
by Johnna Leary - Jul 17, 2015

Exquisitely directed by Ed Herendeen with a strong script by Steven Dietz, On Clover Road at CATF is truly an edge-of-your-seat thriller which leaves the audience guessing and gasping at every new suspenseful situation.

BWW Reviews: CATF: THE FULL CATASTROPHE Stuffed Full of Laughs
by Johnna Leary - Jul 16, 2015

In a twist on the typical modern American romance, The Full Catastrophe shows just how funny and futile our modern ideas about love can be. Dr. Jeremy Cook is a successful linguist, now unemployed, and accepts a mysterious job offer from an eccentric businessman, Mr. Pillow. As part of the "Pillow Project", Jeremy becomes a live-in marriage counselor to fighting suburban couple Dan and Beth, as the couple tries to hide the fact they need counseling from their adolescent son, Robbie. Complications arise as Jeremy realizes he really has no idea how to work as a marriage counselor, having never been married before, and that he is falling in love with Beth, who reminds him of his old flame who got away. Directed by Ed Herendeen and written by Michael Weller, this sarcastic, sweet and witty update of your Leave It to Beaver-esque family will leave audiences rolling with laughter.

BWW Reviews: Scofflaw Playwriting, Standout Acting: ON CLOVER ROAD at Contemporary American Theater Festival
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Jul 16, 2015

The action, from the shadowy world of religious cults and deprogrammers, takes place in the ruins of a derelict motel, where distraught mother Kate (Tasha Lawrence) has been brought by Stine (Lee Sellars), a supposed specialist in reuniting abandoned parents with cult-brainwashed youngsters. Stine intends (so he says) to abduct Kate's daughter from the cult's commune and work with her here. The shockingly scuzzy room tells us immediately is that something is terribly wrong with Kate and Stine's scheme. So does a financial fact revealed in the early going. In the course of the play, we find out what that something and several other somethings are.
